Amazon.co.uk Review
War is hell, but if you prepare properly for war, there's not much about life that will take you by surprise. At least, that's the premise of Unleashing the Warrior Within, in which Machowicz takes the lessons he learned as a Navy SEAL and applies them to real-life situations.

In war, for example, you learn that there are three dynamic elements of combat: target, weapons, movement. The target dictates the weapons, and the weapons dictate movement. In real life, your target is what you want; your weapons are your skills; and movement is whatever you need to get in position to use your skills. But, since deciding upon a target is the step that's most troubling to people, he adds another wartime analytical tool called the CARVER matrix. You lay out various targets you may have in life--a better job, getting in shape, buying a new house, and taking on a new business partner, say. Then you assess the Criticality, Accessibility, Recognisability, and Vulnerability of the target, plus its Effect on your overall mission in life, and the potential Return on your effort.

Machowicz calls his philosophy Bukido, and if you take his classes in Los Angeles, you learn self-defence along with these life-improvement skills. In this book, the object is to get you to choose a mission that is closest and most important to you, and then achieve your goals with military precision. By the time you're through learning the seven principles of combat, what you've really learned is how to think critically and focus your efforts. Machowicz uses his students as examples of how the enemy in life is really a lack of action, allowing life to take you along for a ride. So if your current target is a solid self-improvement course, Unleashing the Warrior Within could be your most effective weapon. --Lou Schuler

3 out of 5 stars Actually lacking focus?   May 14, 2008

Don't get me wrong, this isn't a bad book - it's a pretty easy read with some good self improvement tips and some great Navy SEAL yarns. However, there are many things it is not, and I hope this review helps you identify them and make your buying decision accordingly.

Firstly, it is not a book about combat. Martial artists looking for tips about combat mindsets, fighting tactics etc will be disappointed. machowicz ocassionally refers to his own combat style, and to the three targets (eyes, throat, groin) that it prioritises. However, there is nothing in there that would really improve an existing martial artist.

Secondly, while it has some good self development material in, stretching the military techniques Machowicz has successfully learnt and applied in the SEALs to civilian and business life is (in my view) only partially successful. The concepts he covers (prioritising goals, focussing attention etc) are not rocket science and in the civilian world his experience and examples are pretty limited. There are many much better self improvement books out there if this is your goal (Covey's classic 7 Habits would be a good place to start). This is certainly not a book for a seasoned business reader.

Finally, it is not the book to go for detail on the Navy SEALs. There are some great SEALs stories, and these do liven the book up and make it a more interesting read, but they are fairly short and do not constitute a high proportion of the book. Also, in the Appendix Machowicz mentions that the longest "mission" he describes is actually fictional, based on bits of other missions. He explains that this is to protect the operational details that keep his SEAL brethren safe out in the field. Arguably it could be that it allowed him to create an example which better fitted to the points he wanted to illustrate.

So in summary, not a bad book. An easy read, made more enjoyable because of the SEALs context. If you are in the military, I expect (but don't know as I am not in that environment) many of the techniques may be very useful to you when undertaking missions. If you are a martial artist, business person or civilian, think carefully about what you want from the book, and see if there are any more focussed books out there that can help. I think Machowicz would approve of that approach!

5 out of 5 stars Self Help with Attitude   February 20, 2008

A 10 year veteran of the elite US Navy Seals gives you an insight into what is stopping you living the life you want.An excellent read, and if you apply the lessons in the book, you will find that your outlook on life is changed.Machowicz likens life to war, and gives you the skills to clear the fog, (usually mental), to achieve your goals. Using acronyms to help you deal with situations, you are taught to cut to the chase, and clearly see the one target you need to hit. Interspersed with anecdotes from his days as a Seal, this is entertaining and educational.I re-read this at least once every 6 months, and always find something to use, to make my job, life etc easier.Buy it, use the information in it and see for yourself the difference in your outlook.

5 out of 5 stars Well, this book is the one I needed....   April 27, 2007

10 years of reading "I have the power". Hmm. This guy cuts straight through it to laser focus on what you need. It actually makes sense - being taught acheievement strategies by a military Navy Seal. He's had to make quick, good, tough decisions. He establishs his cred by telling you about Hell Week - the place where most wanabe Seals Break. Then he mingles his talks about fear and action with examples of how he's helped others get over them (not just himself). I listen (figuratively) to this guy because he knows what fear is so if he can overcome it then it's worth taking seriously what he says.
I'm only three chapters in and have noticed a significant improvement in the way I think about getting things done. Target - keep it simple - Weapons - what is the most effective way to get there (not necc the fastest) and Movement (be flexible about how you do what you need to to get the result). I have read literally hundreds of self-help books. This one I am using to not just read but get results. I reccomend it.

I recommend this book. It is very helpful. Makes decission planning simple and effective. Makes you do what you say you will do. Achieve what you want. All you need is focus and the will. I avoid violence at any cost, but when it comes to business or sport I don't play to come second; Machowicz advice and way is amazing. Get the book, if anything, it is a good motivational read.
