4 out of 5 stars In Search of the English Eccentric   July 18, 2008
Why did I like this book?

Roster of lively characters. Loveable puppy of an
inquisitor. Stunning panorama of a curious contemporary England.
One of the most accessible, humorous and fruity anglophile chronicles of
recent years - a song of praise to this extraordinary and entertaining band of outsider folk heroes. Following MISADVENTURE, Hemming seems to be growing into his gnome-hat as a young masterchef of travel writing.

A cogent addition of tang onto a picturesque and archetypal subject. This thing rips a hole into the canvas (Kind of Winehouse-Banksy-like) without losing any semblance of mainstream likeability or self-ironising fragility. You may not, like me, have a lot of truck with The Demise Of The Eccentric point of departure. And you may at times wonder about the more malign, less entertaining, criminal end of otherhood (by which I mean the antisocial, LEGALLY eccentric, murderers, rapists, paedos, bombers, burglars of Mother England) (aside from the mentally ill). But the beauty of the book is that none of this matters to its alluring come-hither spirit. It is an extremely well-produced, beautifully-illustrated, effortlessly well-written, fantastically lucid, and breezily-entertaining, romp around the english shores in search of something faintly ridiculous, but wholly talented.

Big hit. You'll love it.

Wow - this was such a fascinating book! It shook up my ideas about difference and marginality. It portrays how the eccentrics' lives develop a contemporary notion of eccentricity without loosing the dimensions of the people. From the weightlessness of remembering what it is like to be childlike to issues of a national identity, it charts a journey of theoretical development with a sense of adventure and fun. Almost above all, the writing opens out moments in vibrant and vivid ways and manages to be both wide-ranging in its historical reach and yet also specific and intimate.
