1 out of 5 stars the not so rough guide to new york   April 4, 2006

rather out of date. The restaurants hold closed or moved. The prices for attractions were all wrong. The only bit that was correct was the history. The big version was fine which is on its 9th edition. Look out for the second edition as the map is good and it is pocket size.

1 out of 5 stars This book is dull   December 1, 2005

Great book if you want to spend the whole time reading. Personally I prefer at least a few illustrations here and there, after all NYC is one of the most architecturally amazing cities in the world. I want to pick up my book, flick straight to the Chrysler Building while walking along or riding the subway, glance at the information I need with the help of colourful illustrations and photos, then enjoy the Chrysler Building with the added knowledge I gained from the book. I dont want to stand there reading through pages of text while getting pushed along 42nd Street. Also the map in this book is too small. As someone said read this book BEFORE you go (or not at all),because NYC is far too interesting to spend your time staring into a book. Overall this book is dull, Eyewitness Guide is a more enjoyable, and useful TRAVEL book.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect NYC companion   May 3, 2005

I was lucky enough to borrow this book last year from a friend on my first visit to NYC. I'm going again and have not found a better book, so am buying my own this time! Comprehensive maps and information, everything you need really, and as previously mentioned its small enough to keep in your handbag!

4 out of 5 stars Read this before you go   May 21, 2004

As a general rule, I tend to prefer Lonely Planet guides as they have colour photos and are usually slightly more compact. However, the Rough guide is better in a couple of areas, mainly the nightlife and where to eat sections. This book also has some useful hints, such as the best time to visit museums etc and mentions some more out of the way places/ buildings that are worth a visit. A bit bulky but great to keep in your hotel room to plan what you want to see the following day or where to eat that night (Carmine's, Times Square off 7th Ave, is well worth a visit if there are more than 4 of you).

5 out of 5 stars Everything you could need to know about visiting New York   February 19, 2003

This was my bible when visiting New York for the first time! It's small enough to fit in your handbag yet so packed with information that i felt lost without it! It lists resteraunts, tourist attractions, shops, markets, museums, attractions for children, scenic places to visit and lots more. This guide lets you in on secrets that you would not find out from other guides. It tells you the best time to visit places, when certain attractions are on, prices, adresses and a brief background of the place. It also includes a map of Manhatten and a subway map, which are all very vital when you are searching for that well earned Krispy Kreme store!
A must have guide for anyone visiting New York.
