Very out of date information May 17, 2008 I am giving the book a neutral 3 stars as I did not visit all the areas of the island, but I found that the information which I needed wasn't there. The general information on money, food and culture was all up to date, but I found the resort info on Nusa Dua and Kuta was very out of date due to the bombings which occurred a few years ago.
When reading the descriptions and then visiting the resorts, there was no similarity at all. Luckily I took advice from friends when initially booking my holiday, or we probably would have had an awful time. Although it is nearly ignored, there is now much more in Nusa Dua - it is a really luxurious resort. However, Kuta was quite disappointing and very seedy, not the hip and lively place described in the book.
If at all possible I would advise waiting until the new edition comes out in September rather than buying this one, or try a different series if they have a more recent version.

Very good, used this in a 2 weeks trip to Bali and Lombok. Covers all the essential areas you would like to go to. When you get there taxi cab drivers will be able to take you to loads of great places not listed in the book but this is still invaluable nonetheless. Recommended although like most travel guides I don't entirely agree with all the write ups. Rough guides are clearly the best out there so if you're going to get a book then I would say this is the one to get. The lonely planet one does not go into enough detail.
Essential guide - don't leave home without it April 9, 2001 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
I found this guide complete and with just the right level of detail to allow you to explore the countries with your own free will, whilst leaving enough information to understand the nation.Detailed lists of hotel, bars, food joints, etc all helped. More information on where the Australian "surfer-duds" hung out would me more useful, whether you wanted to hunt them out or totally avoid them. When packing certainly don't leave home without it.
