5 out of 5 stars Pure brilliance   November 19, 2008
I loved this book. It's as simple as that. It had me laughing, crying and reaching for the fridge, all at the same time! :-) It is such a fantastic history, both of a single family and the world. So much is said about "immigrants" in the UK today, but I think reading this book would show people just how much we owe to the mix of cultures currently inhabiting our little island. Even if it is just a good Friday night vindaloo! Candappa's writing style is totally unique, which is why I have found myself on Amazon today, searching for more of his work. If you're reading this review because you're trying to decide whether or not to buy it - believe me, it will be one of the best things you ever do. You'll be putting a smile on someone's face (even if it's just your own). Although, I do think Candappa should be made responsible for the rise in obesity amongst his readers.

5 out of 5 stars TANTALISINGLY DELICIOUS!   July 8, 2007
This has to be one of my favourite reads of the year so far! I just dont want it to end its that good! I try my best to read it as slowly as possible to capture the emotions, the smells the tastes, pleasures and mysteries of this wonderful journey!.. highly recommeded to those who enjoy humour, food and family!

I am a busy mum of three, work 4 days a week and expecting no 4 soon.

Its been a while since I've picked a book that actually was "un-put-downable" and that I did not fall asleep after reading a page or two- at night (which is what's happening with Harry Potter's latest adventures right now..)......

Of course I can totally relate to the author's experiences coming from old Ceylon myself....and the recipes- fantastic to have a hard copy of these finally. Well done Rohan- am now looking for your other books..

Brilliant read from start to finish and full of wit - I couldn't put it down - but have yet to try all the recipes.

I also think there would be a market for "plastic coffins" - like the author I have many a time tried to imagine the person lying in the wooden coffin - and the fact that they are reusable.

5 out of 5 stars The story of the British Curry   March 29, 2006

WHY is curry so British? Why is food, and more importantly, who cooks it, so essential to our understanding of who we are. Rohan Candappa tell us in a very readable and entertaining way why something as simple as memories of food can be held in our subconscious forever. Memories that can be unlocked just from an aroma, which then transports us back to an age we had long left behind. His humour is the strong point in this book, it's very off the wall and reminded me of Bill Bryson's style of writing. Some of the childhood memories he shares with us are so sad but never self pitying, they are sandwiched between wonderful old recipes, some memories are just daft, others are hilarious. Buy this book just for the recipes, you'll also get for your money a wonderfully told tale of a first generation immigrant's childhood in England in the 1970's. Bon Appetite!
