excellent June 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Invaluable, had information even the locals we were staying with didn't know: and was so good they asked if they could have it after we left Istanbul. Didn't leave my side the whole time. Isaw this thing in the hands of so many tourists in several different languages, especially on the Bosphorus trip. The maps were very useful for us and so should be for most, provided you know how to read a map. Forget contact lenses and emergency money; if you only bring one thing with you make it this travel guide.
Fantastic - Everything i needed May 8, 2008 I recently spent 5 days in Istanbul. This book came in very handy. We visited most the sights and did all the walks in the book. The information came with images so we knew what to look for and the maps are really clear.
Useless Maps September 10, 2007 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
Having used this guide as the main source of information, I would not recommend it: Some of the information is out of date, which might be forgiven in a fast changing city like Istanbul, but the maps are so poorly drawn and lacking in street names as to make them useless. Particularly frustrating was the fact that many of the addresses provided for restaurants in the food section could not be located on the maps, as the street index did not include the specified street name. The general information on the city is quite broad and somewhat superficial - all in all, a guide book to be avoided.
Outstanding - Makes Istanbul come alive June 20, 2007 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I used this award-winning book in preparation for a one-week trip to Istanbul with a tour group. I also found it extremely useful to give context to the sights I was visiting once I was actually there.
I find Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness guidebooks to be in a league of their own when it comes to visual depictions of the sights. The full colour pictures really made Istanbul come alive. And the tourist and historical information was also very informative.
As the group accommodation was already booked, I did not need to use that section of the book, but I can wholeheartedly recommend the rest. Young and independent travellers might prefer Lonely Planet or Rough Guide for more in-depth coverage of budget accommodation.
