My kind of book June 23, 2005 I was entranced by this book from start to finish; it's a terrific read, on many levels. Taking two small, lively boys and a surrogate 'granny' (a stranger to the family when the journey begins) across the vastness of Canada in the confined spaces of a motorhome was never going to be easy, and Matthew's gift for entertaining writing makes the most of the humour in every situation, honestly and drolly told - some of it will make you wince with sympathy at the things small children do and say which you wish they wouldn't, some of it will make you will laugh out loud, but either way you won't be able to put it down. This is also a great travel book in the best tradition: Matthew brings the book's central characters vividly to life - by the time you reach the end you feel you know them all as friends; and the cast of Canadians, from Mountie to the Amish-like Hittites who read the Bible for leisure (and try to sell Matthew quilts) to the ordinary people we meet along the way, all spring to life via little character sketches and dialogue that reads as fresh and real as if you were there. The book is also packed with entertaining detail about the atmosphere, scenery and history of this beautiful country; you will visit Medicine Hat, find out why Smashed-in-Buffalo-Jump is thusly named, walk on a glacier and travel(wetly) on the Maid of the Mist under Niagara, go fishing in the Rockies and eat Chocolate Potato Fudge in the heart of potato country. There's a lot packed into this wonderful little book and when you get to the last page you will be sorry it had to come to an end: but what a ride we had along the way!
Made me feel like I was back on my travels! September 11, 2002 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I was intrigued to find out how Matthew and an older and wiser Charlie and Nikolai would get along during their travels with the three grannies. Most grannies I know love their grandchildren enormously but are generally happy to hand them back to the parents! In “Across Canada with the Boys and Three Grannies” we get to be a fly on the wall of the motor caravan (motel room, train, boat, tent, helicopter, dog sled and so on… you get the picture). Alongside the numerous fun experiences, there are all those “generation gap” moments you know are just waiting to happen! Interspersed with the travel encounters are a number of highly amusing excerpts from the potential surrogate granny applications and tales from the interviews, together with photos and some cool cartoon illustrations. If you are a granny, a parent, a traveler or a Canada aficionado, you are bound to find lots of things you identify with. I belong to three of those four categories, not to mention being a fan of Matthew’s previous books, so this was always going to be a hit with me but I’m pleased to say it surpassed even my lofty expectations! Thanks for the great read.
Worth the wait September 4, 2002 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
I was one of a number who paid 'up front' for a book in the pipeline knowing that publication could be a while away. So, when the book finally arrived I read it quickly.Given that it is about a father of two who takes himself, his two sons and a variey of grannies across the world's second largest country and I am a childless female with no grandparents there are a lot of areas where comparisons in lifestyle are hard to find. Why then did I really enjoy this book? Well, it is well written. It balances domestic harmony and occassional disharmony cleverly and adds a good amount of trusty info about Canada both current and historic. It also highlights how easy, and sometimes hard it is, to holiday in a motorhome. Something I have been contemplating. Overall I really enjoyed the book. Parents with children will love this book. Grandparents will love it..it's a bargain. Buy it and you'll be glad you did. Choose not to and you miss out on a good tale.
