5 out of 5 stars Excellent   March 14, 2008

This book is a real gem.
I've been to Amsterdam 12 times and everything it described about things I already knew was spot on. It also opened my eyes to many parts and aspects of Amsterdam that I can't wait to explore on my next visit.
It is written in a friendly humourous style (combined with strict accuracy) and gives extremely useful links to websites with even more information, as well as to local sources.
There is a lot of information in here that you won't find in any other guides, and it has good coverage of the usual tourist stuff aswell.
OK, some reviewers have said the map isn't perfect, but most people would buy a decent street map anyway - and this book gives you some useful lowdown on that too.
Whether you are cool or not, if you only buy one guide to this lovely city, buy this one - when I was reading it I felt just like I was there!

1 out of 5 stars They missed the words 'how to' from the title....   July 22, 2007

I've just returned from my first trip to Amsterdam and acquired this book hoping for a decent, comprehensive aid for the first timer...

What I actually discovered was a totally useless piece of Ebay fodder. Whilst navigating my way round the city the map in the book seemed to be off kilter compared to the city's "you are here" street information.

I decided to look for landmarks in the book to find on the map grid (that is listed, hence why the book receives a single star...) but unfortunatley as I am not a pocket-mulching veagan with a panchant for mind altering hash I couldnt find a thing.

If you are looking to try and find your way around Amsterdam without running into every squat and charity shop it has to offer, avoid this book..!

3 out of 5 stars Useful mainly for veggies and organic lovers   June 18, 2007
And i don't mean that in a disparaging way - but if you are a vegetarian/vegan/organic eater then this book will be useful for you as it gives information about some really good restaurants in that vein.

Useful for coffeeshop info and unusual attractions too. Is pretty much useful for most things 'alternative' and different, including an entry on 'Segway' tours!

Map was a bit too small in terms of scale and detail so i would recommend buying a seperate map unless you intend to get lost! (Perhaps the title is a reference to the tiny map!)

2 out of 5 stars Backpackers and American Delight   February 16, 2005

We didn't rate this book that much. We had both been to Amsterdam 2-3 times before seperately and thought this 'different' guide book would help. Unfortunately it is aimed really towards backpapers and americans. It is simply laid out with no detail really on each area of amsterdam. A good cheap guide for backpackers. Sorry but wasn't our guide to go with....

5 out of 5 stars Great Book   February 8, 2005

Been to Amsterdam twice before and can it be a bit daunting because there is so much to do and see. This book has given me lots of ideas of what to do and where to go on my next trip. I'm a Veggie and was not aware of how many eating places there were for me. Also loved all the web site info so I can check these places out before I get there, this will stop us wandering around and save loads of time so we can fit in as much as we can. The only bad point is the map, it's awful!
