Not for your average sight seer - expensive guide book if you are on a budget July 23, 2006 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This was my first trip to Berlin. I bought this guide on the basis of previous reviews & didn't use it. Because it does not include the usual tourist/sight seeing stuff you will need to combine it with a standard guide if you want to do that as well. I think it would be a better book for a 2nd visit to Berlin & if you have a reasonable budget for wining, dining & accomodation. In which case would be best to read up on first & carefully plan your stay & book ahead. I shall keep it anyway as Berlin excellent place to visit & probab would be good book to use to plan a "special" weekend away with. If you want entertaining alternative tours in the city I recommend Fattire Bike Tours. (They have a web site)
Fantastic book - inspiring June 7, 2006 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book inspires you to go off the beaten track which is exactly what you should do when in Berlin. This book helped me to eat drink and be merry with the locals! I would definitely look for a hedonists guide for future destinations!
Very hedonistic indeed February 5, 2006 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Berlin has always had a very decadent and hedonistic reputation. None more so than now. However, it can be a tricky city to get to know. It sprawls over a number of districts that aren't always easy to get between. Unlike other great cities Berlin doesn't have one central area to casually stroll around. A guidebook is essential if you are living in Berlin, let alone visiting for a weekend. Most guidebooks to Berlin are bland and rather dull and clearly haven't been written by a 'Berliner' (to paraphrase John F Kennedy.) 'A Hedonists Guide to Berlin' stands head and shoulders above any other guidebook. It has tried to get under the skin of this legendary city and paint the picture from the standpoint of a local resident. This is a must for anyone that wants to visit the city and feel a part of its everyday life and not just gawp like every other tourist. A clear 5 stars from an Englishman in Berlin.
