Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Thoroughly bored with standardised, dreary pub chains and dull, tasteless pub foods? Then the Which? Guide to Country Pubs is the book for you. For many of us, there is a particular delight in finding a really individual and character-rich country pub that has (apart from outstanding wines and beers) a really individual atmosphere and ambience. It could be said of course that the thrill of the chase (i.e. discovering such off-the-beaten-path gems) is made redundant by this guide; but frankly, most of us will welcome something that steers us away from the mundane and uninteresting.

About 900 of the finest pubs in Britain's country towns and villages have been given the thumbs up by the Good Food Guide team, and this new edition makes its choice based on the best food and drink, value for money and atmosphere. What makes the guide so pleasurable is the careful evocation of the individual feel of each pub, with attention drawn to the location and points of local interest. It goes without saying that such details as opening hours and times when food is served are included but there will be many seeking out pubs with colourful histories, riverside settings and even resident ghosts after this collection. The illustrations are nothing special but each entry has the character of a small, evocative essay and makes for truly diverting reading. Even if you never make it to all the pubs in the guide, it'll certainly be fun to try. --Barry Forshaw

5 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it...   August 19, 2003
Absolutely splendid book - our family (2 young kids) have used this book and the previous edition for about 5 years now and I can only recall being slightly disappointed once - other than that the food, beer, wine and accomodation that we have sampled from this guide has been universally excellent. Maps clearly show pub locations, indicating those with accomodation etc - ideal if you're on the motorway and can't face the thought of Mcdonalds, Burger King, Little Chef etc. Buy It!!

I rely on this to find interesting venues for pub lunches and have visited over 10 pubs and never been disappointed. I would recommend this without hesitation.
