Why pay more? September 25, 2008 This is the bargain of the year. This thing will read 35 (yes, 35!) different card types, and all you do is plug it in your USB port. It's fast, too - no lag on drag'n'drop at all. And it's less than a fiver... what more do you want? Jam on it?
Plug 'n' Play! September 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Great value for money - and so simple to use - simply plug and play! I can't critisize this card reader in any way. Perfic!
More card tricks than Paul Daniels September 12, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I think the previous reviews speak for themselves - this is an excellent card reader both for the price (still 3.99 at time of writing) and for its capabilities. Measuring about the size of a pack of cards, it has 4 slots in the front into which cards and microdrives are placed. As with a lot of electronics these days, it's made of a fairly cheap plastic but for less than a fiver that's easily forgivable.
The reader doesn't come with any drivers but it does work under Vista (as you'd expect) and connects using an included short USB cable. Read and write speeds seem pretty impressive although I am yet to transfer anything of any real size so copying a 4GB file might be the real proof of the pudding. Cards push into the front and are simply pulled out to remove them - it would have been nice to have spring-loaded slots but that might have been a problem to implement given the sheer number of cards the reader can handle. Some of the slots accommodate cards of fairly different sizes so it's not entirely clear at first as to where in each slot some of the cards should be inserted, but this really is just finding fault in an otherwise great value product.
Visit Hama.co.uk for a full list of the cards it can take and whether each one can be plugged without the use of an adaptor. I would detail them all here but it is quite a long list. Suffice to say, the usual suspects are all catered for (SD, mini-SD MicroSD, around 10 kinds of Memory Stick, xD) as well as a bucketful I've never heard of. If your card isn't listed, my advice would be to take a chance and buy one as I'm yet to find a card it doesn't like.
Excellent and very cheap July 25, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is an excellent card reader that works with just about any type of memory card including SDHC. The Compact Flash slot is deep enough to guide the card and ensure that the pins are aligned, which can be a problem with some readers.
You may find that the supplied USB lead isn't long enough to reach the rear ports if the reader is on top of the system box, but then again laptop owners often complain that USB leads are unnecessarily long, so you can't please everyone.
At this price it has a five-star recommendation.
Good, cheap, but not bootable July 19, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
As others have said, for the money it is versatile with the type of cards it can read and fast when doing so.
Unfortunately it is not bootable on a PC (like e.g. LUPO All in 1 card reader for CF/SD/Memory Stick/XD/MMC USB 2.0 - TAKES ALL CARDS) and would not read when connected to my Blaupunkt Hamburg car radio. Hence only 4 stars
