Sets a standard for user friendly guides to cathedarals March 10, 2001

Shortly after visiting the cathedaral I was on the look out for a guide book, but somehow the usual 30 page effort with a large flag indicating the language didn't seem interesting enough. I then stumbled upon this book, and parted with my cash without hesitation. There is a full history of the church, why it deserves its place in history, who contributed (includes the King of England, and he was at war with the French at the time), and what has befallen it over the near millenium since the fire that befell its predecessor. Part of the attractions of the cathedral is it's almost complete set of early medieval stained glass windows and the book includes detailed guides to understanding most of them, complete with an overview and details. I've revisited recently with this book, and spent an amazing hour just looking at two windows. If you go to Chartres cathedral buy the book and read it before you step inside. One day I may even arrange to tour the place with the author who lives locally and gives regular guided tours- details inside.Clive
