The Emerald Forest June 5, 2004 5 out of 12 found this review helpful
I just don't get it.This film is GREAT.Why on earth isn't it avalable in PAL ??!!!!!! That's really want I want to say. Anyway,if ever one wants to watch a film that kinda touches one on on a spiritual level, yet is still I guess an action film-SEE THIS. There's a bit more to it than that :) Sorry, this inadequate "review" does not do the film justice! I'm just so pissed off that can't get it in PAL ! Peace & Ecology.
The best rainforest story available on film April 22, 2000 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
This is a real window on the Amazon, told from the point of view of the indigenous peoples, not anthropologists or apologists. A very thought-provoking film. The Emerald Forest bravely attempts to capture the indigenous world view, and way of life, and even if it is a little idealistic, it is beautifully directed, deeply moving and full of action. This is definitely a film that can be watched more than once; making it a great one for any collection. The film never loses pace, even when it is attempting to show the mythological background that lies behind the way of life of the tribe it is portraying. Much of the mythology is accurate; as can be seen by comapring it with books available on the subject (like Recihel-Dolmatoff's Rainforest Shamans) every step of indigenous life is ritualised. But this is no academic tome or environmental rant. It is as light as it is considered; a great story as well as a well-researched statement on John Boorman's part. Charlie Boorman, the director's son is superb and very convincing as the hero, Tommy (Tomme) who is kidnapped by an Amazon tribe called the Invisible People, and brought up by them.
