5 out of 5 stars A lesson in how slashers should be done   October 22, 2003

Friday the 13th part 2 is an excellent example of what a horror film should be and is my favourite movie in the FT13th series (followed VERY closely by part 3 which is also brilliant). Although it is basically a remake of the first with a different killer FT13th part 2 manages to succeed on a number of levels, firstly, the killer. The movie debut of Jason Voorhees (not counting his brief appearance at the end of the first) is truly chilling. I think Jason has a really creepy presence in this film, helped by the sinister looking burlap sack over his head, This presence is something which Jason seemed to lose in the following films. The main reason why Jason is so much scarier in this film is, I think, because he is much more human, in the later sequels Jason is nothing more than a killer zombie, however, in this he is a deranged man who lives in the woods near the camp, this is a lot more disturbing in my opinion. And, although i am as big a fan of Jasons trademark hockey mask as the next FT13th fan I think that the dirty sack which he wears in this film is a lot creepier.
One of the other things which I like about this film is the death scenes, they are really creative for the most part and actually manage to pack a punch when they happen. The scene where crazy Ralph gets strangled to death with razor wire and the guy in the wheel chair gets chopped clean in half are particular favourites of mine.
Along with the additions of a good looking young lead, Ginny, and Pamela Voorhees decapitated head this film manages to elevate itself above it's counterparts (Parts 3-X) and is easily one of the best slasher films of all time along with Halloween and the Burning.
It is true that this film does have it's fair share of plot holes (like the fact that Jason seems to have long hair and a beard and that the teens at the bar just seem to disappear and never return to camp) but these can easily be overlooked when watching the film, after all, since when have all the FT13th films always made sense anyway (just look at how some of them follow on, parts 8 and 9 for example). these don't deter from enjoying the film at all.

3 out of 5 stars Just when you thought it was safe to go back to camp!   July 24, 2001

Theres more gore in store, with this first sequel to the highly successful 'Friday the 13th' series. Steve Miner directs what is essentially a lazy affair, taking none of the brutal suspense that occupied the original film. That said, the cutting-edge make up effects are a real treat, creating a certain amount of dread as more summer campers start to bite the dust. This is popular with horror fans since it marks the first appearance of killer Jason Vorhees, who quickly became a pop culture icon with the sequels that follow. However, buckets of gore and screaming doesn't hide the holes of the screenplay, and it's basically a retread of the first film. Otherwise it's a pretty enjoyable slasher movie.

5 out of 5 stars Much more entertaining than the original.   September 11, 2000

Friday the 13th - Part 2 is much better than the original. The acting is better and so is the script. I found the first 'Friday' totally boring, but this is great. This one surpasses the original, but so does all of the sequels!
