 Overlit tale, but Still Enjoyable. September 13, 2008
This is a promising tale from the end of Mccoy's first season and sees the introduction of the Ace character. Kane is a wonderful villain. The story is let down by being overlit throughout. Also there is a painfully embarrassing 'Aliens' rip-off scene complete with motion-trackers and oversized guns. Once again this scene is ridiculously overlit, and instead of Vasquez we get a very well spoken Enlgish middle-class lady acting like a hardened marine. PAINFUL!! There is quality to find in this tale however, mainly due to Edward Peel taking it very seriously and it's worth a watch.

To be honest I am not an avid fan of the Sylvester McCoy era but this story, Remembrance and Survival are the only exceptions.
Before I even watched this I had high hopes for it because it oversees the introduction of Ace, one of my fave companions. This story gives her a good introduction and by the time of Survival it's nice to see how much she has matured from here.
The story itself is actually quite good and has plenty of twists and a cast of strong guest characters.
Sylvester McCoy puts on a pretty average performance as the good Doctor (then again to be fair it is the end of only his first season). However Bonnie Langford is diabolical as Mel and makes me releived that this is her final story. Tony Selby mainly steals the show however as the lovable space crook Glitz.
Overall Dragonfire isn't the best and yet isn't the worst story in the entire history of Doctor Who. It stand shoulder to shoulder with stories such as Logopolis, The Keeper of Traken and Twin Dillema.

This is a first-rate tale. There is genuine atmosphere and emotion, helped by a brilliantly dark soundtrack (sadly never released on CD). Ace comes across as a strong character, and Kane is a good villain, both literally chilling and sympathetic in his bitterness. A couple of rather silly cliffhangers aside, this story was the real step on the road back to the glory days of Dr Who.

Season 24 is regarded by many as the worst series of the original Doctor Who run. In 1987, Dragonfire won the best story in Doctor Who magazines annual poll. But rather then suggesting that this is a good story, it is best of a poor group of stories. The story features the return of Sablom Glitz, although when it is considered how many time periods and alien planets The Doctor could visit, it is seems a little unlikely that he would happen to run into him on a distant space colony. The story also introduces Ace, the popular Seventh Doctor companion, and it has the departure of Melanie.

My favourite story from McCoy's opening season by a long shot, 'Dragonfire' never pretends to be something it's not and goes about telling a decent story in a decent way. Okay, so it remains an alright story in a naff as you can get season, but at least it isn't 'Delta And The Bannerman' again. At least.
