An involving portrait of two people who become family. March 5, 2002

A surprisingly high quality understated piece about two socially maladjusted people who didn't realise how they need each other. Chris Cleary Miles is excellent as the volatile young James, who knows he has a past to deal with, and has love hate feelings towards his natural father. William Hurt plays the forty something village postmaster Graham, a batchelor who wants to adopt the ten-year-old james. Graham is forced to confront his own childhood as James sees through the veneer that Graham has carefully cultivated. James, in his turn, learns that the giving of trust is a risk worth taking. I cried the first few times I saw it. This is not schmaltz.
