Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Stay out the Basement is a tale of suspense in one family.   April 6, 2001

Poor Margaret. She never realised how worse her life could get- especially if it had to do with her father, who is a workaholic. Her father has been working down in the Basement most of his life (it seems) and has never really paid much attention to his children- who he brought into the world. Lately, it seems that Margaret's father has been acting rather strangely. Margaret wouldn't have noticed, if it wasn't for her brother, who made her go down into the basement- to get his jacket, as he dropped in a rush to get out.

While her father is out, Margaret slips down into the basement with her brother to see what has been going on. If it wasn't for the living plants that seemed to be acting as if they were humans, Margaret wouldn't have ever gone down again- unless there was a reason to. She tries her best to please her father, but one day he makes them both soup- a greeny, slimy goo that could well be something as horrible as Monster Blood. Someone is at the door, and so while her father answers it, she chucks the goo down the drain. She knows that she has to find out what is going on- even if it ends up into a tale of suspense and tension, that builds up with horrible images, making Margaret realise what is going on. It could all end up with Margaret making a terrifying decision, that could change the family forever.

This tale reflects how important families are to everyone, and the uneasyness of the family- not knowing what is happening, in the Basement- heightens the tension and suspense in the book, and the film.
