One of the most efficient and solid action thrillers around January 31, 2008 Jean Claude Van Damme plays a fireman who's lost his nerve as well as the respect of his young son. But that's soon about to change when terrorists take over an ice hockey stadium and the Vice President's box. On hand is Van Damme who is determined to save his family and foil the terrorists' plans, which include blowing up the stadium during the match.
Van Damme is likeable as always and Powers Boothe lends some charisma as the chief villian. He's no Alan Rickman, but his presence definately aids the movie. But the aspect that really raises this effort is the action. It's virtually non-stop and nicely varied, despite being in one location. Whether he's fighting a giant penguin (it'll make sense when you see it!), swinging from the rafters or even taking part in the hockey match itself (again, it makes sense during the film), there's always the right balance between humour and tension, thanks also to some pacy editing.
There are some resemblances to Die Hard of course, but this is one of the better 'clones' out there and I constantly find myself coming back to this one!
Best 'Die Hard' clone January 16, 2008 I'll admit, Van Damme has made some crap, exceedingly crap movies before (Street Fighter The Movie. Anyone?) but this film rocks. The plot is quite basic nowadays seeing as we are used to seeing films like this, hero has bad experience at start, get's a new job only for workplace to be taken over by terrorists etc but there are some nice touches to the story like how Van Damme makes a gun out of an Aerosol spray can. The fights are great too, especially one between Van Damme and a female assasin in a kitchen even if it does look like it's come out of 'Family Guy' (you'll have to see both this and Family to get what I mean).
enjoyable tripe from the great van damme September 14, 2006 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am a van damme fan,i have all his work and will always say he is the true action hero who cant act, that doesnt bother me as long as he delivers in the spills, thrills and kills factor.Sudden Death is a film that isnt original in any way,in fact the plot is taken indirectly from die hard, and thats not an easy movie to compare yourself too,and as a film on its own right sudden death is watchable, even enjoyable but im wearing my hail hail van damme hat here ,and i cant imagine many people taking to this if they dont like van damme. The plot is basic, and i wont go into it here as in a film with no twists new viewers need something to discover for themselves, the film has a semi decent script and the violence although minimal is pretty darn good.
A VAN DAMME CLASSIC September 11, 2006 I watched this last night and I really enjoyed it, at first I was not expecting much but as I sat and watched the film I found myself getting engrosed in it, in the end I couldn't leave my settee.
Van Damme plays a father whose daughter is dramatically kidnapped during a championship ice hockey game. With the captor's demanding a billion dollars by the game's end, Van Damme frantically sets a plan in motion to rescue his daughter and abort an impending explosion... before the final buzzer.
I was expecting a DIE HARD rip off but it was a good film in it's own right. Van Damme is one of my favourite actors so I was expecting big things from this film and that is what I got.
But... (yes there is a but) I thought the ending was a bit of a let down, it felt rushed and what was it with the helicopter facing straight up, that just wouldn't happen in real life.
All in all a really cool Van Damme film and action film that should be in every action film fan's dvd collection.
THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! May 27, 2006 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
this is the best movie i'v ever seen if you watch it you will want to watch it again and again and again i like it because it's so violent it's about a man called darren and he is a fire inspector in a hockey game so he goes to work but he doesent know that the game has terrorists who are holding the vice president and some other people hostage but darren brings his kids with him so his daughter is kidnapped by terrorists and darren wants to rescue her and save everyone from the terrorists
