Amazon.co.uk Review
Twister was a mega-million-dollar blockbuster--helmed by a director (Dutchman Jan de Bont) hot off another scorcher hit (Speed)--that flaunted state-of-the-art digital effects and featured a popular leading actress (Helen Hunt) who would win an Academy Award for her next film (As Good As It Gets). But ask anybody who's seen it and they'll tell you who the real star of Twister is: the cow. Not to give anything away, but the cow is one of those inspired little touches (like, say, Bronson Pinchot's career-making cameo in Beverly Hills Cop) that adds a touch of personality to a gigantic Hollywood production. The story is blown out the window after an impressive prologue in which Hunt's character, as a little girl, witnesses her daddy being sucked into a tornado. Basically, Hunt and Bill Paxton are thrill-seeking meteorologists chasing twisters in order to study them (and help warn people of them, of course) with a new technology they've developed. If you thought the Kansas tornado in The Wizard of Oz was every bit as scary as the Wicked Witch of the West, then this may be the movie for you. --Jim Emerson

3 out of 5 stars "The Thunder of God"   November 28, 2008
The film that kicked off the 90s disaster movie revival, Twister is a spectacle, pure and very simple, with just enough plot to propel you to the next big set piece of destruction as ex-stormchaser Bill Paxton finds himself swept up in the thrill of the chase as he tries to get Helen Hunt to sign their divorce papers. Don't look for anything profound - Cary Elwes' villainous better-funded rivals even drive black vans while, after the film goes to enormous lengths to stress how all-powerful the twisters are by throwing oil tankers and even houses at them, the heroes survive by, er, tying themselves to some pipes and holding on very tight. Yet the special effects are suitably apocalyptic while the film has a real sense of speed and motion thanks to some great helicopter and driving work, and even the presence of two of the most irritatingly mannered supporting actors in the business, Philip Seymour Hoffman (in the Jack Black role) and Jeremy Davies, doesn't dampen the dumb fun. And no doubt about it, the cow is definitely the star of the show.

Universal haven't exactly put much effort into the UK DVD. Whereas the European releases have some featurettes, the UK just gets a trailer and a decent widescreen transfer.

5 out of 5 stars A FORCE 5 film!   May 18, 2008

Well I've had this film on video, laserdisc, DVD and now Blu ray! ... I think I like it! Its nothing amazing plot wise, but its just darn good fun to watch! This is also a region free blu ray which makes it even more value!

Picture is awesome! I upscaled the dvd version recently and it definetly looked dated! This blows it out of the water! However, the sound is the real showcase here! if you have a hi def sound system get ready to be blown away!

I remember seeing this film at the cinema and I can't believe it was almost 12 years ago. I also remember the film proceeded to blow off my ears, destroy my ear drums and chew up what was left of my hearing!!!! I came out of the cinema slightly deaf as a result but I was also amazed with what I had just gone through. I've never seen (or heard) a real tornado but I can imagine but if they are anything like what is depicted here then they must be, as is quoted in the film, 'like the hand of God'.

This film is a real rollercoaster of a ride. There's not much in the way of script or story and the dialogue is hammy. The effects are very good and there is a real sense of movement flowing through the film; lots of helicopter shots swooping down on cars! But who cares about the bad acting, story and script; from time to time we all need to see a film like this where you can just sit back and be entertained. Unfortunately this is one film which loses a big chunk in transition from the big to the small screen particularly that sound. But it's still a good ride.

I watched this movie to see Helen Hunt. And she plays her part well. But the star of this movie is the Twister and the effects it has on it surroundings. The special effects are great. I have heard some people say that the plot is not great....There is a love story, a healing of a pscological trauma and the story of what it is like to be a storm chaser.....So I think there is a plot with sub-plots involved. But when all is said and done, the twister steals the show.

Great special effects carry a fairly bland storyline, but very watchable film.

A team of researchers aim to plant a device in the path of a twister to monitor what makes them form and how they move, the idea being to provide the public more advance warning of their arrival. Needless to say this is quite a dangerous operation, and the twisters move fairly randomnly. Two teams compete to get the data and risks are taken for one team, with devestating results.

Great scenes where cows, farm equipment and a full size petrol tanker are flying around the screen.

Great disaster film.
