Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Dawson's Creek is, first and foremost, one of the defining shows about teen angst and complicated teenage relationships. The first two seasons were the classic ones, as Dawson oscillates in his affections between beautiful Jen and his best friend Joey and manages to fall entirely between two stools. This is a show in which indecision and failure to commit is always going to lead to nothing good, however uncertain the prospects of commitment. Michelle Williams as Jen and Katie Holmes as Joey provide the show with its emotional centre of quirky intensity. James Van Der Beek as the essentially unreliable Dawson provides good looks and a hang-dog complexity of feeling to the mix, while Joshua Jackson as his sidekick Pacey provides both reliable comic relief and a sense of more depth to come in the show's later seasons.

The "Best of Season 1" provides good examples of what the show does best. "The Scare" is a finely judged commentary on teen horror films--the show's creator Kevin Williamson was also responsible for the Scream franchise--and "Beauty Contest" is a finely judged social comedy about the show's high-toned resort community. Dawson's Creek is essential teen soap, savvy enough in its post-modern edge to play well with self-parody and intertextuality.--Roz Kaveney

2 out of 5 stars Poor value so-called compilation.   November 5, 2002

Here is evidence (b) in the poor Dawson's Creek merhandise- [it] might look cheap, but look at how many episodes you get out of 20 odd episodes in a season- that's right: two!

Wow, screaming good value- you don't get the Pilot (where it all started), nor the pivotal episode where Pacey notices Joey - which sets up Season Three & Four plotlines.

The Scare is almost a reason to buy this, as it is rarely screened in this country (either on E4/Ch4)- though it really is just sub-Urban Legend stuff (though not as risible as Season 5's Halloween related tosh).

It would be nice if Seasons One to Five had several episodes that comprise a best of- six would be the ideal number- this has been done before with The Larry Sanders show. Then again, might be better to wait for that My So Called Life DVD instead...

4 out of 5 stars Vintage Dawsons at its best!   September 13, 2001

"The scare" is a scream inspired edition of Dawsons creek with excitement all the way. This episode is a must for all horror and Dawsons fans. The episode is even scarier than the haircuts in this early episode of Dawsons creek (if you see Paceys fringe and Dawsons forehead you'll comprehend.) The Scream is a good episode but is over shadowed by the fantastic beauty contest episode...Pacey in his prime, a comical genius in this episode. In my opinion this is the best episode in series 1 and one of the best in Dawsons creeks enterity.

5 out of 5 stars Great!   October 3, 2000

I thought this video was excellent! 2 of the best DC episodes in season 1! In The Scare it was great, and kinda scary! And the the beauty paegent, you can hear Joey singing and Pacey doing a braveheart speech! VERY funny and romantic (even though I reckon Joey and Pacey should've been together from the start! )

5 out of 5 stars Dawson's Creek, it has to be two of the best episode's   July 8, 2000

The Beauty Pagent has 2 b one of the best episodes, when Dawson tries to kiss Joey and she turns him down, they realise they love each other.

5 out of 5 stars the quintessential teen drama   April 25, 2000
...Season 1 of DC rules- it is the quintessential teen drama, and the episode 'Detention' is probably the best ever. However, bear in mind that Trouble has shown these episodes about 10 times each...
