Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Much less fun than its predecessor, this 1989 sequel starts off on a bleak note by telling us our heroes from Ghostbusters have been on the skids for five years and Bill Murray's lead character never did hook up with Sigourney Weaver's lovely symphony-musician character. What's more, she has a kid by somebody else. Everybody's on an uphill climb, and Ghostbusters II never soars the way the first film did, despite having the same director, Ivan Reitman (Dave, Kindergarten Cop). The lame plot finds the boys attempting to prevent a disaster on New York City caused by too many bad vibes in the Big Apple. Yikes! Fortunately, screenwriters Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis have penned enough good one-liners to keep Murray busy, and if the ghostly special effects no longer surprise as they did in Ghostbusters, they're at least inventive. -- Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

1 out of 5 stars Dreadful sequel!   February 27, 2008

If you're hoping to watch an action-comedy like the first Ghostbusters film, then you may as well forget about purchasing this one. There are a few vaguely funny moments, but the jokes are generally weak and simply not good enough to be funny. The "action" is practically non-existent until a short while before the end; and even then, we are forced to contend with some really embarrassing dialogue and acting from the main evil ghost. Oh, and Slimer only appears in this entire film for a few seconds! An utterly boring film, and a complete waste of what could've been a hilarious and fun sequel. Avoid!

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first film but it still ROCKS!   August 3, 2007

4 out of 5 stars NOT QUITE AS GOOD AS THE FIRST FILM BUT STILL A CLASSIC   July 5, 2007

There's an extra fine line between recycling material and straying from material. When sequels are different from the original, people complain. When they're too close, people say they're just remakes. This is why I think people generally don't enjoy the thought of film sequels.

But I'll admit it. I like sequels. When they are deserving or done right, I enjoy them. When I meet likable characters I don't mind seeing them again. Now, sometimes there should never be sequels to movies with likable characters. Sometimes there can't be (what would "The Usual Suspects II" be about?). But sometimes, like with "Ghostbusters," sequels can be a good thing.

Sometimes they're done very well ("The Godfather Part II," "Aliens," "Terminator 2," "Toy Story 2")

To make a successful sequel, you have to be a truly great filmmaker. It takes a genius to be able to continue a story with the same characters without straying too far from the original source material, and without losing sight of the original's purpose. (That's why so many die hard fans of "Terminator 3" were upset by the ending -- me included -- but hey, the rest of the film was pretty darn good as far as action sequels go.) "Ghostbusters II" is, I feel, a very good sequel, because it continues the story of the four Ghostbusters, while still sustaining the sights of the first film, and the humor, too. It got bashed by critics and audiences alike when it first hit theaters five years after the original, but what can I say? I enjoy it.

The Ghostbusters (Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson) have been plagued by numerous lawsuits since the opening of their prosperous business, and a court has ordered them to close down their business. But when a mysterious slime haunts Dana (Sigourney Weaver), they come back out of retirement to investigate. Unfortunately, they are arrested, right after discovering that New York City is about to be taken over by an ectoplasmic purple goo flowing beneath the city's highways. And Dana's newborn baby is becoming possessed by an evil spirit -- could the two incidents be related?

As the end of "Ghostbusters" had a giant Stay Puffed marsh mellow man, "Ghostbusters II" has the Statue of Liberty. Yes, that's right, the Ghostbuster boys enter the Statue of Liberty and walk around New York City extended high above the ground.

This sounds corny, yes? Well, it is, but so was the first film. It's meant to be. Corniness is all part of the fun, after all, Bill Murray is just as funny as he was in the first film, while Aykroyd and Ramis continue their great co-star roles. People who thought that there wasn't enough black in the original "Ghostbusters" will be happy to know that Ernie Hudson is in this one from the beginning. And Cheech Marin is in it as a cameo, he plays one of the Dock Watchmen as the Titanic arrives.

I enjoyed this film. I liked the purple goo lurking beneath New York City -- it adds the distinct silliness to the film that the first had. People can complain about "Ghostbusters II" all they want, but I -- for one -- think it's a great sequel to a great comedy.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Sequels EVER!   November 2, 2004

I have to say being a huge fan of the orginal I loved this film even more. I gots all the goods from the first film plus a whole lot more. Lots of people don't agree with me, I don't know why. But any one who knows anything about films and movies knows that this a top quality film and sequel. It's fun for all the family and there are bits for adults too.
The cast are great especially Sigourney Weaver. The script and plot are great, well the plot is a bit bad, but that's not important (I could be about giant bunnies and I'd still watch it)
All in all anyone who dismisses this film with out looking at it is a blatant fool.
Get the film and enjoy endless hours watching it over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars EVEN BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL   November 1, 2003

Ghostbusters II is way too easily dimissed. Its an absolute classic, featuring miles more gags than the original. The first movie is great and we'll never forget the opening scene in the library, but the sequel seems even more carefree than the first. I reckon a lot of the scenes are improvised and heavily ad-libbed in GII with Bill Murray given full licence to do his thing. The scenes involving his 'Psychic' public access show and later when he re-unites with Dana Barrett and her new child are very funny. Back at Ghostbusters Dan Ackroyd and Harold Ramis get even funnier with their geek-com moments, especially when they start playing music to affect the spectral slime's mood (followed up with a great gag later by the much under-used Ernie Hudson). Buy this film and giggle.
