Essential viewing for any serious Sellers fan. March 17, 2001

Although at times a little too glossy and sweeping, this biography to mark the twentieth anniversary of his death, has Peter Sellers marked very much as the creative genius but impossible man. Friends like Harry Secombe and David Lodge pay tearful tribute. Fans like Michael Palin just seem to be in awe but you are left needing to get closer to the comic and learn why his story remains so dark and tragic. What this has going for it is unprecedented clips from early and up until now lost archive. An extended sequence from a 'lost' American TV movie and Sellers in 1970 directed by Roman Polanski that was never released. Executive producer is Iris Frederick, mother of Sellers widow Lynne - and we can only assume guardian of probably the most extensive library of his work. Maybe there's even more to come to light? The Sellers' swansong 'Being There' is very much to the fore, Shirley MacLaine on record with at least one extraordinary revelation concerning the comic's early death. Essential for serious collectors are the TWA and Barclays TV commercials, also featured, made by the actor when his career was dipping. A sad but satisfying hour - not though as thorough as the BBC's major documentary a few years back.
