4 out of 5 stars charlton heston - the bible stories   August 12, 2008
Who is this Eckhart person? Are we supposed to take seriously the views of a man who can't spell and whose use of punctuation is worse than some 8 years olds I teach? Get a grip you silly little man - it's only entertainment. What do you expect from an actor for god's sake? He isn't Simon Scharma, and in narrating the stories in their (believed) geographical locations, he's just telling the stories as we know them and have heard them for so many centuries - we are not being dictated to by some Christian fundamentalist. Furthermore - 'see my other reviews'? I think not - this is clearly an exercise in oneism - I'm afraid someone didn't get enough attention from mamma as a child and equally clearly hasn't time for interaction in the real world because he is too busy trying to be a critic. How very sad.

Obviously, it's not going to be challenging, but Bible bashing? Hardly. It treads a fine line between various camps without wishing to offend anyone. That's no bad thing. For those of us that don't take the Bible verbatim, it doesn't mean we can't enjoy the stories or extract some truth from them. And Charlton Heston is a good choice for reading these pieces aloud and acting as our guide through the stories. It's history-lite, but who cares? For myself, it's just nice to see a great actor tackling some of those old, great stories.

1 out of 5 stars bible bashing and the unchallenging world of the religious conformist   December 14, 2006

If you're one of those folks into mass delusions then this is for you> It offers you the pure 'Father Christmas' view of the bible, i.e unchallenging and ultra conformist. Ideal then for those who like their brains to 'click click' in time with others, not so good if you like to explore the truths behind the myths.

It ignores church history in terms of the probable creation dates for the gospels, as fairly widely agreed by most 'form critics' ( the folks who use dating methods from writing form and contextual usage which, if used in 1000 years time, could place an Enid Blighton book in the mid 20th century).

Never mind then that the earlist gospel 'Mark' would have been created at quite a significant time after Jesus or anyone who knew him would have died, (ever tried the effect of chinese whispers out upon a message Mr Heston?), that the later gospels stretched out over the following several hundred years touching the 4th century and all are full of their writers' personal attempts to resolve their political agenda of the day through the influence of the words they wrote....Relevant still for the 21st century and the free minded folks of the world? THAT'S WHAT WE'D LIKE TO FIND OUT MR HESTON!!

So, Lets ignore the inconsistances and the contradictions, the obvious politics and the blatant emotional blackmails. Let's forget the Bishop Irenaeus, who became the bishop of Lyon after the Christian community there had suffered a devastating persecution. That he without authority chucked out most of the Gospels. This ultra conservative in the 4th century created the version we have now because the remaining books suited his agenda and the others didn't, he then selected this selection, not god I'm afriad.

Let's carry on with only the fairy tale though, far safer and more comfortable for our lives to remain in that child like accepting state of delusion. Thanks Charlton, but I must catch up with that paint drying on my walls, I'm sure there's a profound message hiding in it somewhere!
