4 out of 5 stars Don't believe the box!   October 20, 2008

Twilight Zone The Movie was always a special film for me as it featured a return to the twisted universe of Rod Serling for veteran composer Jerry Goldsmith, who had cut his teeth on low budget shows of its kind in the late 1950s and early 1960s. When the film was announced on Blu Ray this was good news, as by and large the four segments still stand up well as stories (if you can stand the over-sentimental mawkishness of the Spielberg entry and the dire "acting" of the prologue in the car anyway...)

However, early reviews and even the reverse of the Blu Ray box stated that the sound was in mono, which put me off a lot. However, upon purchasing this I was delighted to find that the audio is actually a superb 5.1 mix, with Goldsmith's powerful score pushed to the rear speakers a lot to give it all the ooomph you would want (especially the playful fiddle and thundering ostinatos of the final score, Nightmare at 20,000 Feet).

Also occasionally criticised is the picture quality, and indeed as several sections of the film take place in darkness (especially in the first segment, Time Out) grain does intrude. However, this is a fault with the source (and you can actually see the focus shift from lens to lens in places), but most of the time the picture looks superb too. This is especially noticeable in the Joe Dante episode, with its harsh close ups, vivid primary colours, great use of the aspect ratio and wacky Dutch angles.

A grainy trailer is the only extra, but fans of the film will not be disappointed - indeed, based on what they may have heard eslewehre, I expect they'll be positively delighted!

4 out of 5 stars Twilight Zone The Movie   December 29, 2007

I have been waiting a lifetime for this to finally come to DVD,my video version wore out a long time ago. After the opening scene, which is handled with the right air of both comedy and horror,we are met with the famous Twilight theme and the eerie intro spoken with relish by the great Burgess Meredith. The first segment by John Landis holds up ,perhaps better than it should given the terrible accident on set that took the lives of star Vic Morrow and two child actors and has an ending that will stick in youre head.Joe Dantes segment is typical Dante Menace mixing with Slapstick in a worthy up date to one of the most famous of all the Zone episodes.George Miller's episode in my opinion is by far the best THERES A MAN ON THE WING OF THE PLANE!!!!!!! with a monster far superior to its remake's and also wraps up the whole movie nicely. The ONLY let down is ironically the very director that you would have thought could handle this material in his sleep, and unfortunatly it looks as though he was asleep while directing it.Speilberg coats the whole segment in syrup to the point that tooth decay will set in if you watch it twice.Still worth four stars though and at this price you really cant say no,it is a CLASSIC and its good points far outweigh the bad.BUY IT!!!!!

This HD DVD is the weakest in terms of image quality I've seen yet. Most of them are excellent, but on this one the picture doesn't look any sharper than standard definition.
