Amazon.co.uk Review So, what's the story, then, behind Oasis' 1994 debut album Definitely Maybe? Did this brash salvo of rakish Mancunian rock 'n' roll egotism usher in the era of "laddism", the shock waves of which still reverberate around town centres in the form of Saturday night yob culture? Was this Britain's victorious reclaiming of the rock band throne, the crown having been stolen in a coup (arguably for the first time since Elvis Presley) by Yankee grunge imposters? Or were Oasis just second-hand Sex Pistols with a twist of Lennon? Six enthralling DVD hours later--promo videos, footage from Top Of The Pops, Naked City, multitudinous live venues etc and heaps of extended foul-mouthed chit-chat with shrewd label managers, cocky band members, loopy mates and Burt Bacharach--and the viewer may not reach any discernable conclusion. However, one's thinking cap is well and truly stretched in an exhaustively entertaining manner. Rich in anecdote--a nocturnal meeting with a spaced-out member of the Stone Roses on a tractor in Wales, ferrying bass amps across the River Fowey in Cornwall on a speed boat, Tony Carroll's "crap" drumming, Digsy's lasagne--and bulging with barnstorming rock tunes about roll-ups, booze, dole queues, fame and flatulent canines, Definitely Maybe the DVD definitely does the job. And snapper-decking singer Liam Gallagher? A twit sometimes but you have to admire anyone who can make a tambourine look like an offensive weapon. --Kevin Maidment

What music DVDs should be like October 8, 2007 If you ask me, this is the first time I have felt that it might be worth buying an album DVD equivalent. The Definitely Maybe DVD includes, of course, all the songs, including videos and live performances of each song. The chances are you already own the album itself, so it's the visuals and the live performances you'll be interested in. And both are definitely worth while, although possibly not particularly in the long term - depends what sort of fan you are.
And if you are the sort of fan I am, then that may not be why you got this DVD at all - the key to Oasis (as many fans will know) is the combination between the music and the men. And in the interviews on this DVD, the men are in fine form. They are full of anecdotes, as you would be in recalling one of the most pivotal events in your life (and in modern music history). The brilliant stories of the recording studio on an island, which meant the lads had to leave the pub early to avoid being cut off, and tales of drug-stealing, tractor driving shenanigans with the Stone Roses are joyous, and hilarious, and will catch you up in the magic of the beginnings of Brit Pop. So will the stories from the technicians - dealing with Liam Gallagher for the first time, or pushing the volume up to the max so that Definitely Maybe was the loudest album on the juke box for the year after its release.
And for anyone that doesn't own the album, then remember that this is the classic oasis - raw, swaggering and brilliant. From the ripped off intros to Shakermaker and Cigarrettes and Alcohol to the wonderful solos and sweeping melodies of Live Forever and Slide Away, to the minimalist brilliance of Married With Children and Sad Song, this is a superb, superb album.
Enjoy.
Outstanding album on DVD with extras, nuff said October 13, 2004 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
Here you get the incredible album Definitely Maybe. I could stop there because that in itself is just incredible. But on this DVD you also get live performances of the songs, videos and a documetary, which is well worth watching. In the documentary, Noel is on typical fine form and Liam is (as usual) talking some nonesense. Mark Coyle is quite funny and Digsy is crazy, I can hardly understand a word he says. Mani from the Stone Roses also appears and he also has some good things to say. It goes through song by song telling you how each song was recorded and how they were written (Supersonic was written in a few minutes). As for the live performances they are just amazing, although Rock 'n' Roll Star isn't a great performance (I think they are miming, but it is on Top of the Pops). There are two live performances of Live Forever as there is also one on the bonus disk, which also has I Am The Walrus. The live performance of Married With Children really stands out as it is done electrically, it is seriously good. Another reason to get this DVD is because of the bonus song Sad Song, which is an amazing song. This is not on the album unless you buy it on vinyl. This DVD is a MUST HAVE for any Oasis fan.
Fascinating! October 8, 2004 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
Fascinating. And surely an album that should not only sit on the shelf of each and every rock historian of any worth, but will also stand up with pride alongside any of the greatest rock releases of the past half a century. If you don't already own the CD... buy the DVD. If you do already own the CD... buy the DVD. I don't think you will be too disappointed. I found the live performances particularly fascinating, in that they were all made made during 1994, the year of the album's first release. I would like to single out for special mention the live performances of 'Rock And Roll Star' (from TOTP, celebrating the album's No.1 chart position) 'Live Forever' (at Glastonbury) and 'Supersonic' (From C4's excellent 'The Word' - Oasis' TV debut) The 'making of' documentary is also fascinating. But watch out for the strong language, of which there is plenty! Only to be expected I guess - this IS Oasis after all - but 'Exempt From Classification'? Hmmm. If I wanted to be ever so slightly critical, I would say that the sleeve notes (contained in a separate booklet) could have been made more comprehensive, and included lyrics to all of the songs. But that's about my only real critisism. 'Definitely Maybe' stormed straight to the top of the charts upon its original release in 1994 and became the fastest selling debut album by a British act of all time. I would not be at all suprised to learn that this DVD release has performed a similar feat. Buy it - before supplies of the Limited Edition Bonus DVD have been exhausted - and be fascinated too. NB. I own an 'International Release' copy of the DVD but as far as I am aware this does not differ from thre UK release.
Brilliant September 26, 2004 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I pre-odered this DVD and couldnt wait for it to come through my letter box, I watched it straight away and its brilliant, the videos, the live performance and the package as a whole is stunning. I was only 10 when then bought out the album but have been a fan for around 5 years now and would of loved to off been around when it came out..a brilliant band that changed mine and many people lives, and the world. A must for any oasis fan.
Rock 'N' Roll DVD... September 19, 2004 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
10 years has certainly gone quick hasn't it eh? And how better to celebrate it than with a DVD release of the best album of that particular year. When you pop Disc 1 into your DVD player the album starts playing straightaway. You now have the interactive options at your fingertips. All you have to decide is whether to push "UP", "DOWN", "LEFT" or "RIGHT" on your DVD remote. You will then be treated to either documentary, live or video for that particular track. Or if you want press "MENU" and you can choose what to view individually. Also for certain videos you can select "ANGLE", and be treated to another version (promo). If I may suggest something, I would put the disc in and press "UP" and watch the "documentary" all the way through. (much easier, and flows better. "Disc Two" involves a number of featurettes, but can be viewed continuously if need be. I loved this DVD as you can listen to the album as a kind of Bootleg album as well if you so wished. Anyway here is the tracklisting if you're interested. 1. Rock 'N' Roll Star (from 'Top Of The Pops', September 1994) 2. Shakermaker from ('Naked City', June 1994) 3. Live Forever (from Glastonbury, June 1994) 4. Up In The Sky (from Chicago Metro, October 1994) 5. Columbia (from Hammersmith Palais, December 1994) 6. Supersonic (from 'The Word', March 1994) 7. Bring It On Down (from Gleneagles, February 1994) 8. Cigarettes And Alcohol (from Southampton Guildhall, November 1994) 9. Digsy's Dinner (from Buckley Tivoli, August 1994) 10. Slide Away (from New York Wetlands, July 1994) 11. Married With Children (from Los Angeles Whiskey A Go Go, September 1994) 12. Sad Song (from 'Later With Jools Holland', December 1994) The featurettes on the second disc could have been longer but this is not the story of oasis after all, just their debut album. The main interviewee here is Noel, in fact Liam is not on here that much but he only grunts when asked questions anyway. His singing is what he does best anyway. The group re-visit the shoot where Definitely Maybe was photographed, the booklet is nice work as is the sleeve. A must for all Oasis fans.
