1 out of 5 stars Utter pants   August 8, 2008

This is a huge let down. As the bad guy, Michael Ironside does a pretty good job but the movie is such a stinker it floats in the water. Avoid.

1 out of 5 stars I remember coming out of the cinema and thinking...   May 15, 2008

"What the Hell just happened there?" This ranks alongside Blade Runner and Brazil as one of the most notorious 'fiddled with' movies of all time, but perhaps up until the release of the Renegade Edition didn;t get nearly as much publicity. As this version stands, it is a shambolic, murky, unfettered mess of a film, fatally damaged by the intereference of the completion bond company and the producers to salvage the production (over budget on Day 1!!) from imploding. The original storyline from Highlander is jettisoned and instead we find out that MacLeod and Ramirez are actually exiles from an alien planet called Zeist, and obviously time runs a lot slower there because all of a sudden Michael Ironside's baddie decides to despatch assassins to Earth to wipe a now 103 year old MacLeod out. Then Ramirez turns up, then dies (again). there's a big fight between MacLeod and Ironside, he dies and then freeze frame ending??? Eh? What on Earth???

Watching this film you get the feeling that the writers/makers had not bothered to watch the first film.
The 'from another planet' storyline is both unamaginative and lazy. Conner was blessed with 'feelings' and 'knowlage of all things, to aquire the 'knowlage' he had to be the last and both the sequals and TV series ignore this.
However the ecological story could have worked had the story followed a sword&sorcey line rather than scfi and been kept in Britain where the rich history, Druids and legends such as the 'green man' could have tied Conner into the 'earth healing' story line.
It would have been possible to bring back other characters as 'spiritual guides'(as obi wan was in star wars)
Give this film a miss if you dont want to be hugely disapointed by poor, cash in follow up to what was an imaginative and entertaining film.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Sequel Ever   June 14, 2007
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

When you make a sequel to a movie, you really do need to stay faithful to the original, since it's the fans of that movie who are most likely to have any interest in it.

Highlander 2 turns the franchise from science-fantasy to science-fiction, whilst also contradicting pretty much everything we thought we knew from the previous movie.

Immortals now come from another planet called Zeist and somehow Ramiraz returns even though he was killed in the last movie, and apparantly they both already knew eachother on Zeist centuries ago, even though they first met in the 16th century as per the last movie. It's these kind of contradictions that make a bad movie even worse.

Add to that a hokey futuristic story about environmental problems and some bad acting, and you have the worst sequel ever. If you want an OK-ish Highlander sequel that's faithful to the original, watch the next one, Highlander 3.

I've recently seen the 'Renegade' version of Highlander 2, and to be honest, it doesn't do much to improve the story. Instead of coming from another planet, immortals now come from the distant past, albeit a distant past that looks like the distant future, being more technologically advanced. If anything, it's now even more confusing than the original cut, and there's still no explanation as to why Ramiraz is alive, and to be honest, no amount of re-cutting can cover up bad acting and a terrible script.

1 out of 5 stars DONT WATCH THIS FILM!!!!!!!!!!!!   December 26, 2005

I have to say that watching this film is definately the worst decision I have ever made. It doesnt even follow the story of the first! It turns out that Connor mcloed is from space! if you were going to make is sequel is that the way you would go? seriously guys, dont bother with it, its crap.
