Solid and dark thriller July 3, 2003

Takashi iishi, the man behind the Blackangel films and Freezer, follows up his earlier Gonin with a sequel. Replacing the original film's five male protagonists are five female leads, who range from reasonably stable to dangerously unhinged. The plot revolves around a jewelry heist and the ensuing game of cross and double cross; no new ground here, then, but instead a clear slate for the films real focus, which is the characters.
Ishi's films all feature strong feminine parts, and in this he delights in having five to play with; Each of them is scrutinised in turn, their motivations and weaknesses laid bare. His recurrent themes of loyalty, honour and retribution are explored, all through his cold and unblinking visual style, contrasting often naked flesh with cold steel surfaces and souless neon nightscapes.
A maker of sparse and violent films, Ishi is an acquired taste, but for fans, this is certainly worth the while. Whilst never quite reaching the heights of it's predecessor (in my opinion his best film), Gonin 2 is, in it's own right, a solid and dark thriller, morally ambiguous, stylish and violent.
Extras include Tokyo Bullet previews and trailers, filmographies, production notes and set photographs, and the picture quality is excellent,as is the sound.
