This dvd contains a documentary on the lives of the Bronte-sisters.
The narration is fairly slow and well pronounced, and therefore excellent for those Bronte fans who are not native English speakers. Subtitles are not provided. Nor are any other extra's.
The content of the narration is - for those acquainted with the subject - fairly uneventful. Sometimes a little opinionated ("Branwell was a bad painter") it sheds no new light on the subject, but tells the "standard" known story. Only exception is the end, in which some theories are mentioned, including the one that Charlotte poisoned her sisters!!! (see: The crimes of Charlotte Bronte by James Tully). Anne's death is mentioned in one sentence (and no mention of Scarborough), as is the demise of Emily. Mr Bell is hardly mentioned, and Charlotte died (at least according to this documentary) of the complications of pregnancy.
Irritatingly Branwell is called "Bramwell" on both the sleeve and the dvd menu.
On the positive side this dvd gives you loads of pictures of the important places of the Brontes: not only Haworth, but also the church at Hartshead, the birthplace in Thornton, the Clergy Daughters school at Cowanbridge and miss Woolers school at Roe Head.
Note though, that it (probably) was made without the assistance of the Bronte Parsonage Museum. Therefore there are NO pictures of the interior of the Parsonage. Plenty of the exterior, the graveyard (from all angles) and the church. No picture of the later added Bronte chapel in the church and no mentioning that the church today looks different from how the Brontes would have seen it.
Nor has the National Portrait Gallery been of assistance, since (except on the sleeve) none of the known portraits of the Brontes are used. Instead some drawings, based on the portraits, are used.
All said, this is a fairly good, if standard, documentary. I would recommend this item for school purposes and to any Bronte enthusiast who isn't able to visit Haworth. It gives you some idea of the world of the Brontes and that's what matters.
