Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Although the premise of infidelity and its devastating consequences on all involved may not be a new one, Unfaithful still manages to emerge as a stylish, involving thriller. Based on an obscure 1970s French offering, director Adrian Lynne's version is pure Hollywood, from its casting of Richard Gere and Diane Lane in the lead roles, to its graceful visual style and even its somewhat unsatisfactory denouement. It's impossible not to watch the film without thinking of Lynne's own Fatal Attraction, although here the gender roles have been reversed to focus on the affair between bored suburban housewife Connie and exotic French book dealer Paul. The obsessive relationship between the two provides the film with its only real frisson. Gere is given very little to work with as the dull cuckolded husband Edward and delivers even less. The film moves rather slowly towards its key plot twist which never really lives up to its promise.

On the DVD: Unfaithful may be lacking a little as a film, but this DVD is an impressive package. The film has a rich visual element and the digital picture quality brings out the best in Adrian Lynne's unique eye for detail. The reams of extras include commentaries from director Lynne and the cast, a well put together documentary, interviews, features, deleted scenes and a (superior) alternative ending. Lynne is always good interview value, coming across as a slightly less eccentric Ken Russell, and Lane and Olivier Martinez are both engaging and charismatic. A shame, then, that the movie itself isn't quite so impressive. --Phil Udell

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant   August 9, 2008
The acting and storyline are fantastic.

For once, a Hollywood film which parts from Hollywood story conventionality. There is no hero, no bad guy, no good guy, and no happy ending.

There is some brilliant acting, great filming, pretty good sex scenes (can't knock that), and an ambiguous end.

OK, anyone familiar with modern detective shows will know that the police bit is full of holes - the police would definitely have found and convicted the people they needed to (I won't say more, as I don't want to spoil).

But though the brilliant acting owes everything to Hollywood, the other good things about the film owe everything to its French origins.

All in all, a great film, which stands out against other much better known ones. If it were possible to give 6 stars, I would.

3 out of 5 stars A Heavy Topic   May 24, 2007

"Its only a laugh" say love rats Julie and Richard, "Its just a joke", tell that to your partners Peter and Emma.
And what about your children?
The message of this film is that `adultery is fun` - SORRY but I dont agree.
At the end of the day BOTH love cheats are destroyed - so were those early morning romps at Hyde Way really worth it?
The Thursday and Sunday evening meets really that much fun?
This is a tame version of Saturday Night Specials - and I would suggest that JULIE JOHNSON starring punk rocker Courtney Love is a better movie on the subject of adultery.

I watched this film recently. To be honest, I found the first hour a bit slow. In the second half of the film, things start to happen. The acting is very good and its got an ok storyline but I couldnt help feeling there are better films out there like "A perfect murder" and "Fatal Attraction" which are more exciting and have already covered similar ground.

5 out of 5 stars Oscar winner DIANE LANE is awesome in this great thriller!   April 26, 2006

The gorgeous DIANE LANE (who won a Best Actress Oscar for this film) is stunning in the this great thriller. Her acting is superb and she owns the film. RICHARD GERE is great too as her husband in a supporting role. The film is very intense, erotic and involving, but also entertaining with twists aplenty. The DVD has tons of extras including some great deleted scenes, interviews and an audio commentary with the director and star DIANE LANE.

5 stars!

4 out of 5 stars a very good film that could have been great   November 1, 2005

I liked Unfaithful a lot but thought that the character played by Olivier Martinez- was not portrayed in enough detail for us to care about him and the events connected to him. This film pulls off a clever trick by having lots of very steamy sex scenes which come across as part of the storyline and not as scenes that dominate the impact the film has on the viewer.I came away thinking that no matter how appealing an affair with someone other than my partner might seem, the potential consequences are not worth the effort!
