5 out of 5 stars what heartbeat and monarch of the glen should be but aren't   May 29, 2004

This series is everything a sunday night family drama should be -funny, big hearted and cosy, with superb acting and spectacular scenery. Being on DVD means that sunday night feeling is available any time of the week. OK, so it's not the most realistic series ever, but that's not the point: the point is to escape into a world where conflicts may arise but we know they will be sorted out by the end, and we are left with a warm fuzzy feeling. There are also more than a few belly laughs along the way, and in a world full of depressing drama series and 'dark' comedy, this is a much needed ray of sunshine.

5 out of 5 stars Flawless Classic Drama we need more!   July 28, 2003

This is one of the best dramas ever. I watched the second series on TV and couldn't wait for more. If you only saw the second series (like me)this really fills the gaps.
Some of the best acting comes from James Bolam and Micheal French. The story is all about how Tom and his family come to live in Ormston. Tom, a workaholic doctor living in Manchester ,comes to Ormston for his best friend's wedding and when news of his fathers retirement leaks, he moves back home to save the day and turn Arthur's old fashioned hospital into a new and fresh NHS Annex to the district general.
With colourful local characters and fun filled storylines (and of course the screams as Tom and Arthur start World War 3) its just another day in the life of the two Lancashire doctors in the 1950's.

4 out of 5 stars A nostalgic look at medicine in "the good old days"   July 11, 2003

This a really good value DVD as you gets loads of viewing time for your money. "Born and Bred" has finally managed to achieve what I thought was impossible: a medical drama without masses of stomach-churning gore - but then, the hospital is really beside the point as this is the story of a village. The episodes are entertaining, and something you could definitely watch with your granny, though they do border on the twee side! The tales are not really that realistic - even in the 50s and 60s how many doctors were this devoted - but hey, it's entertaining! Good for a Saturday night in!
