5 out of 5 stars just lovely!   August 1, 2004

What a lovely little movie (and "little" is meant entirely as a compliment!) about the joys and pains of love and family!

Here's a movie that doesn't need any big effects and that still had me pinned to my seat while blinking away the occasional tear...but it leaves you with a smile in the end...

No, the story is not necessarily new but then these are people like you and me facing every day problems and forced to make decisions we can all relate to.

Ioan Gruffudd is at least as talented as he is handsome and the whole cast - including and especially the little boy who plays his son - do a terrific job.

If you have a single romantic bone in your body you will probably enjoy this...but be warned: If you don't have a family of your own just yet this movie might well make you yearn for one!

5 out of 5 stars Hooked on Parsons   July 8, 2004

This book got me hooked on Parsons and I have waited with baited breath for the next two books to come out. Since reading this I have passed it on to friends and family and eveyone has enjoyed it and found Parsons to be a brilliant writer.

Before this I have always read books by female writers (except for Nick Hornby) as I thought that I could not relate to a male writer's views or that they simply would not be able to write with the same depth of feeling as women. How wrong I was! This changed my views on male authors and men in general.

A very touching book. Not sure about the characters. Yes, the main character is an idiot by having a one night stand but his wife seems to turn into super-bitch afterwards and seems to use the infidelity to give up on a marriage which she always felt had trapped her. It is similar to 'Kramer versus Kramer' but better, I felt.

This novel is very well adapted in the TV drama which is now available on video and DVD.

1 out of 5 stars Dross.. pure and simple.... wooden acting   June 26, 2004
5 out of 23 found this review helpful

I type this review as I sit looking at the paused DVD of what can only be described as dross.

I have over 200 films in my DVD collection and 200 videos and this is the first time I have taken to writing a note inside the case of any film.

The note reads "If you have opened this case and are considering watching this DVD, please close it and do something more enjoyable, like pulling hairs from your nostrils"

The acting is so wooden, that if Pinnochio were to enter before the end of this film, I would sit up and prepare myself for some decent performance.

I have no empathy for the characters, the storyline is disengenuous and unconvincing with a gamut of cliches.

The fact that this is a BBC production may be the reason that this film is such a disappointing waste of time.

People often say that the original book is far superior to any film drawn from it... In this case, it would be impossible for the book not to be better than the film.

I walked out of the cinema when "Batman and Robin" came out (and had to wake up the woman on the end of the row)... but believe me, this is far far worse...

Enough said...

5 out of 5 stars Never read a book faster then this   April 15, 2004

Excellent... I assume no more words needed. Even if you don't have similar issues regarding your own lives, beleive me the way it is constructed, the way it is written it is a very good novel. This book proves how good father a man could have been...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent   May 13, 2003

I am so looking forward for this release. I remember watching this last year on the BBC and absolutely loved it. I'd recommend this to anyone who liked the Richard E Grant film 'Jack & Sarah'. This is better however - much more appealing and timeless. Just buy it!
