Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
This 1953 musical is very much a vehicle for Doris Day, in the title role, as a wild cowgal who can out-shoot and out-sing any boy on the range. When an actress arrives in Deadwood and uses her feminine charms on Jane's secret love, Wild Bill Hickock (Howard Keel), Jane tries to mend her tomboy ways. Not exactly up to the feminist code of honour, this is still energetic and Day is very perky. Of course, one could almost detect a homosexual undercurrent with the cross-dressing Jane, but this was Hollywood in the 1950s, so we best not. Calamity Jane won an Oscar for Best Song--"Secret Love", by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster. --Rochelle O'Gorman

5 out of 5 stars One of the best musicals ever!   November 2, 2008
My mum bought this film for me along with My Fair Lady and Seven Brides For Seven Brothers when i had been intrested in theatre and musicals for a while. Now, don't get me wrong the other two are amazing, but this is just top-notch! Along with The Sound Of Music, this is not only my favourite musical, but also my favourite film of all time! It's just a classic, and they never go out of date. Even though i wasn't alive when this first came out, i love it all the same. And Allyn McLerie gives a good performance as Katie Brown too. I watch this film so much. It's brill. And great fun for the whole family. Good to watch with grandparents as they will remember it from their childhood! A Must see!

5 out of 5 stars My 12 year old loved it   January 27, 2008

I saw this years ago and forgot how brilliant it is in a feel good kind of way. As a former tom boy I can't help but relate to 'Clam' and was pleasently surprised that my daughter and her friend watched it all the way through and she asked to watch it again the next day. Only downside is that I can't stop singing the tunes in my head and sometimes outload much to my family's embarressment.

One of my favourite films EVER, if not my favourite. It compares the care-free western country life with the busy bustle of Chicago. The songs are great, the plot genius and the script hilarious. Add this to Doris Day and a touch of romance, it makes a film to watch again and again(I have watched it four times but could still watch it again and again!) A MUST!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars If you dont like this - you need to be on the next stage coach out of town !?   March 14, 2007

It is so hard to believe this film was made in 1953 !? It has a timeless quality and no matter how many times you watch it (thanks to fresh as a daisy Doris) this film never feels old.

The colour, life and sheer dynamism of Doris in the role takes your breath away - she IS Calamity Jane. Doris was born to play this title role. She is sassy, self-assured, cocky and confident. It almost seems a shame that she needs a man to make her 'complete', but the evolution of her character from Tom Boy to Beautiful Woman is legendary - who could fail to be stunned at the sight of Doris in that yellow dress, picking daffodils, singing 'My Secret Love' ?

Everything seems to take 2nd place to Doris in this film - she shines so brightly - but the music is catchy, melodic and fun ( I love that 'I got two wonderful arms, I got two wonderful lips...' drag act !?) and the story moves along nicely, with a heart-warmingly old-fashioned happy ending that will keep Mum, Gran AND the kids content for an afternoon of pure indulgence.

A classic. Must-have for any DVD Musical collection.
