The Pilot That Started It All March 18, 2006 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
This is the movie that introduced the world to the Ingalls family. It works highly effectively in setting the scene for the events that follow on when the series started in earnest as we learn the reasons for the Ingalls departure from their previous home (the big woods of Wisconsin) and the challenges they face as they make their trek along the plains of Kansas. They show real resilience in the face of adversity and even manage to find a friend in Mr Edwards who would later beome a much loved character as the series developed. There's the beginning of the great chemistry here between the characters that would only grow in time to capture the hearts of so many. There's also some of the most beautiful scenery which enriches the story so much. This is a fine movie in it's own right although i'd have to say it's not quite as engaging as the series that followed. Its story although authentically portrayed never really catches fire in the way we would later become accustomed and it's a little ponderous in places too. Also from a technical viewpoint there seems a problem with the sound. It's rather unclear and muffled at times. This shouldn't detract though from the fact this film will be greatly enjoyed by fans of the series and for any collector it's an essential purchase.
