Amazon.co.uk Review
The bright, glossy world of Doris Day and Rock Hudson sex comedies gets a self-aware brush-up in Down with Love. Pillow-lipped Renee Zellweger (Chicago) plays Barbara Novak, the author of a bestselling book called Down with Love that advises women to focus on their careers and have sex a la carte--just like a man would. Determined to prove that Novak is just as vulnerable to love as any woman, dashingly chauvinist magazine writer Catcher Block (ever-charming Ewan McGregor, Moulin Rouge) pretends to be a courtly astronaut who wouldn't dream of putting his hand on a woman's knee. This piffle of a story seems like nothing more than an excuse for ironic double-entendres and dazzling production design, until a sneaky plot twist suddenly raises the stakes for the movie's end. As he always does, the brilliant David Hyde Pierce (Frasier) scores the most comic points as Block's fussy editor. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Guess it's like Marmite...   November 17, 2008
This movie is like marmite: you either LOVE it or you absolutely HATE it! I saw it, found it hilarious, over the top, funny, witty, with good acting and great sets. My best friend turned it off after 20 minutes as she couldn't take it.

In the end it all depends on what you expect a movie to be. If you want a (somewhat) serious rom-com with a believable enough story and characters that might (perhaps maybe) really exist with utterly romantic moments... then this is NOT the film for you. If you, however, love Austin Powers and bright colours, if you find caricatures funny and can take twists and turns, then this might be the film for you.

As for me, it's one of my favorite films of all time. When I'm under the weather or a little sad I put it on. It's so far away from reality and yet so funny, colourfull and witty, that it cheers me up every time I put it on. I love the sets and clothing! For me it's a 5 star. The office scene with Ewan talking about his socks staying up has me in stitches every single time!

1 out of 5 stars Down the Toilet   November 15, 2008
Doris Day and Rock Hudson movies were no good the first time round, with their split screen phone conversations and crossed wires. They never rose above a bad TV sitcom. So why would Hollywood producers do another one--not a spoof but a straight copy? Are there really no good new stripts available?

Renee Zellweger is a good actress and has done some good light comedy. She's also done drama (Cold Mountain) and musicals. Why she'd allow her talents to be wasted in a film like this is beyond me.

Ewan McGregor is a mystery to me. He is an average actor yet he has managed to crack Hollywood open. I watched as much of it as I could, hoping it would amount to something. It never did.

5 out of 5 stars Simply charming!   September 9, 2008
I saw this film on my friend's shelf recently, I borrowed it and have had it on loop ever since....

I have to confess that I did not expect much from it initially, as it did not get great media coverage during the time of it's release. Furthermore, I am not a fan of either Ewan or Rene. Nonetheless, they both charmed me - Ewan in particular...

I would also like to credit the unsung heroes: the film has extremely strong supporting roles, as well as a killer wardrobe; Dior homme suits on McGreggor are a match made in fashion heaven.

If you are looking for a thorough cheering up over and over and over, (and some) this is the film for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great funny romance!   September 3, 2007
I don't know how this movie was so unsufficiently advertised, but it is a great one. I watched it just after it came out, since I like Renee Zellwegger. It is a romantic comedy, of course, but it is not at all shallow, has surprises that no one expected and that still don't seem "too much", as they sometimes do, when the author is sooo trying to find a new twist. It is a joke on women, on men, and the whole game. Watch it.

5 out of 5 stars Great romantic comedy to watch with the one you love   July 29, 2007

We LOVED this film. I had never heard of it, and bought it as a bargain as an extra little present for my wife so we could watch it on our anniversary.

I was a little nervous beforehand, as I had done no research on the film, and my wife, a fan of rom-com's had not seen it (not a good sign as it had been out a few years). It was also heftily reduced, again not always a good sign.

It turned out to the the perfect film to watch in bed on our first anniversary with a bottle of bucks fizz and breakfast...

Charmingly witty, with the politics and humour updated a little to give it a fresh zing, with far more depth than the "nice" old Doris Day movies had.

Anyone who has seen the odd Doris Day movie (and liked it) in their time will recognise that this is a slick stylish homage to the films of those days.

You can tell the cast had a great time making this film, it really shows. The performances of Renee Zellweger, Ewan McGregor, and David Hyde Pierce (Niles from Frasier) were absolutely spot on, correct for the style, and there were plenty of moments where I roared with laughter.

Great moments of comedy, great fun plot, and some lovely moments harking back to films like Pillow Talk.

It is definitely a film we will watch again, maybe on some rainy afternoon, or on a future anniversary.

A great couple film, and a chick flick that where guys will also find enough in it to have a laugh, providing your prepared to let go and indulge in the sort of unashamedly romantic film that it is.

Heartily recommended! Hats off to Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor, the rest of the cast and the director. A great "feel good" movie.
