5 out of 5 stars Pure Entertainment!   September 5, 2008
I loved it!It is a mixture of romance, comedy and action. The whole movie is really a parody of all these genres, and the actors are magnificient! I thoroughly enjoyed it! I bought this dvd because I like Timonthy Dalton, but I did not know what to expect. It was a surprise! A small jewel!

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Comic-Book Adaptation   July 21, 2007

A light hearted and humourous movie ,in a similar ,if slightly more slapstick and less sinister vein to the more well known Beatty/Pacino/Madonna adaptation of another comic-book character 'Dick Tracy ' (made around the same time , as I recall), this film was , as far as I know , never released at the cinema and has only recently become available on DVD . Why it was never released is something of a mystery to me . There were rumours at the time that the studio wanted Brooke Shields to lose weight during the making of it so maybe thery weren't satisfied with her appearance at the time ,but in reality she looks fantastic in this film , a fact emphasised by the great variety of fifties style clothes that she wears during it's course . Perhaps the studio were unsure whether the film would find a sufficient 'market' because in truth it is hard to say at whom this film is aimed ; it's a bit too 'adult' to be strictly speaking a children's movie , but a bit too children's movie-ish to be aimed at a strictly adult market . Whatever the case a heterosexual male could theoretically watch this with his kids or his granny while drooling over Brooke Shields and nobody would be any the wiser ; in other words it's what they used to call 'good ,clean,all-round family entertainment ' which in some respects increases the mystery of why it was never released into cinemas, at least in the U.K . If you fancy a light hearted romp into comic-book land and up the Amazon (no pun intended) and back , and a film you can watch with all manner of family members you could go a lot further wrong than with this ; and for fans of Brooke Shields it is a 'must see' .

4 out of 5 stars Absurd but amusing comic adventure   June 3, 2004

Brenda Starr (Brooke Shields),a glamorous newspaper reporter, is the heroine of a strip cartoon drawn by a slightly wet but pleasant artist. He somehow manages to draw himself into the strip and finds himself sharing Brenda's adventures. She is trying to track down a professor who has invented a mysterious formula to replace petrol (I think). Various baddies are also after the formula. Naturally, the artist is in love with Brenda, but his nose is put out of joint when gorgeous Brazilian aristocrat Basil St. John (Timothy Dalton in tight black trousers and an eyepatch, slobber, drool) turns up. They all chase off to South America to try and get to the formula, I think. I've seen this film three times now and still don't entirely follow the plot, but it doesn't really matter. It's fast and funny with lots of over-the top characters, mad escapes, dramatic rescues etc. And with Brooke Shields in tight skirts and Timothy Dalton in tight trousers, there is something to please everybody. Just enjoy it.
