Whoppee Rocks!! February 3, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have always loved this film!! It was the first film Whoopee was the lead in and she certainly is the lead in this film - in fact she makes this film her own and none of the other actors even get a look in. It is such a funny action packed move from start to finish and it hasn't dated since it first was released back in 1986. If you like Whoopee or comedy in general then you will really like this film. There isn't a film like it out there today, this is such a gem of a movie that I feel everyone should own this masterpiece. it's like Sister Act in the funny stakes so if that makes you laugh then this will make you laugh harder!!
Thrilling & Funny & a 'net' relationship before its time! August 6, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
As other reviews has mentioned this is a thrilling and hilariously funny film. There's plenty of danger and mystery, but with great humour along the way. A perfect combination. A film that is serious but knows how to balance the fun, making the whole film an entertaining and enjoyable experience to watch. It's unforgetable really and a real classic. I highly reccomend it!
Please note the following observation contains HEAVY SPOILERS.
Forget You've Got Mail, Sliding Doors and all those other supposed internet relationship films. Here is a film that really hits the nail on the head as to the real progression of a relationhip that starts on a computer, before the internet was even really in use! (if it was, she would of used a search engine to find the lyrics to that song in 5 seconds. It's good thing she couldn't do that). Of course it's more of a 'network' relationship than an internet relationship but the basis is exactly the same. Films like You've Got Mail etc. rely on the two people involved living on each others doorsteps or having met before in some form etc. The reality is since computers can reach far across the world, it's now possible to talk to someone who isn't conveniently living next door, but clear across the country or even the other side of the world. With the main protagonist working in a bank in the US and Jack, a British Intelligence agent stranded in Eastern Europe, these two certainly aren't going to be casually bumping into each other while buying a morning newspaper! They're total strangers only communicating through words, yet they'll both find words can be pretty powerful. Their communication starts off as text and despite this limitation they get a feeling for each others personality, to the point where they can guess each others responces (example: Terri turning away from the screen and still responding to his messages by guessing his reaction to her silence). Text then progresses to voice (in a way) as she hears him on his answering machine and from then on has a voice to go with the personality. After this of course she'll want to meet him. People who are extremely far apart can have alot of difficulties to overcome before they can be together, such as financial issues and so on. But Terri has to defeat the KGB! But of course she's become so attached to him through his words, that she'll do anything for him. And so her next big challenge is the first meeting (more scary and dangerous than the KGB? Perhaps. Those breadsticks certainly suffered). After this fails she says a line that most would probably say about a relationship that starts on a computer "hey its just text on a computer, why should it mean anything?". But she can't forget how it made her feel. And although it begins as love at first type, it ends as love at first sight. A film before its time I'd say.
Whoopi Returns July 27, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This film is great fun and Whoopi shows she's right for comdey roles this film came before the Sister Act films but if you have seen them and liked them this film would please you as well. Whoopi makes this film work I can't believe anyone else apart from Eddie Murphy could have made this film work.
Its a Gas, Gas, Gas!!! May 29, 2004 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
Action packed comedy starring Whoopi Goldberg as Terri.Terri works at a bank as a computer operator and spends her days trying to annoy her spiritless boss and get russian television on her monitor. One day, a secret agent trapped in Eastern Europe taps into Terri's computer and asks her to do a series of amusing and dangerous tasks to help him get out of the country he is stranded in. One of the most memorable scenes in the entire film is when she is injected with truth serum and ends up confronting her boss in the office. Very clever humour and a script that twists and turns and keeps you right up to the very end sequence. Well worth watching - I recently brought the DVD to add to my collection and although there aren't any special features - the film is excellent quality, there are no obvious cuts and Terri's language hasn't been muted. (anyone who has seen the film on TV should know the notorious swearing in the phone booth has been bleeped out)
Woopi Jumps In To Save A Spy April 27, 2004 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Terri Dolittle is a bank terminal operator in down town New York, and"Jack" is a spy stuck in Russia, desperate to get out.But what can thesetwo "opposites attracts" people have in common? They both use the bank'sterminals to communicate, and I think Terri feels that sometimes it's notworth the hassle. Being shot at, nearly kidnapped, carted away in a telephone booth, anddrugged are starting to take their toll on Terri, as she battles furiouslyto find someone to help Jack out. Her erratic behaviour really annoys herboss, and her friend feels she should be dating. But things are badenough for Terri, her new coleauge turns out to be someone else, andJack's so called friends are really enemies. This is a great film for everyone - pleanty of humour - as it's one ofWoopi's many talents. There's also quite a lot of thrilling moments: inher house, at Jack's and when we all thought Terri was going to die in theriver.OK, so it does look a bit dated now, it's still a cracker. Thetechnology used was quite radical at the time, but most people will findit laughable now. The supporting stars are great and the screenplay isgood. Soundtrack is a bit minimal, but when it does kick in it's quiteenjoyable. Putting it as a budget release is a godsend, but the lack of extras israther disapointing to say the least. I would have liked director'scommentries and a few traillers for starters. Good movie, and will probably live the test of time.
