Amazon.co.uk Review A peak achievement of Japanese anime, Ninja Scroll is a propulsive mix of samurai action-adventure and supernatural fantasy from writer-director Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Supernatural Best City). This is defiantly animation for grown-ups, complete with fountains of blood, plenty of naked flesh and (in both the subtitled and dubbed versions) some decidedly strong language. (Students of Japanese language could pick up some useful expressions.) The plot sounds like a 16th-century variation on The X-Files: an entire village has been wiped out by a mysterious plague and an antigovernment conspiracy of invulnerable demons seems to be responsible. A wandering ninja, Jubei, and his female counterpart, Kagero, team up to defeat the plotters. Jubei is a classic reluctant hero, agreeing to participate in the mission only after being fed a slow-acting poison; the antidote will be supplied after he cooperates. And Kagero, a looker whose embrace is lethal, is a femme fatale with a difference that seems distinctively Japanese: sexual contact itself is poisonous, especially for a warrior with a pure soul. --David Chute

Jubei our hero January 4, 2008 This Manga film is probably one one the greatest animation films from Japan in the last 20 years. I have seen this movie more than 10 times. Jubei is a great hero who is a bit reluctant to fight unless he gets payed. If you like classic style Manga then buy this. You will not regret it. I promise you good viewing. If you don't like it then there is something wrong with you.
A CLASSIC August 28, 2007 one of my 1st anime i bought (new/used 4.00) still have fond memories years after !!!! simple plot x1 good guy takes on loads of bad guys all of whom have freakish special powers....great interaction between the characters involving mystery ,violence, love and governmental poliTRICKS...good visuals tight soundtrack overall a good purchase
BLOODY HELL!!! July 12, 2007 This is the kind of film that you never tire from, and whats more, its a manga film you'll understand. Ninja Scroll has everything, violence, sex, gold and sweet sweet ninja goodness. its typical crazy japanese ninjas, samurai and demons.
the storyline is so original and it has 8 bad guys, each one with a cooler ability than the last, like melting into shadows, multiplying yourself, rock body, reincarnation, the list is endless, all wrapped up in superb animation.
One of the best animations of all time, without a doubt, and even though its an 18, ANYONE of ANY age can enjoy this film.
Finally a Manga film that makes sense! April 16, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you're like me then you'll know that a lot of manga films can (at times) make no sense whatsoever.
But Ninja Scroll actually has quite a logical story, and it contains everything you'd expect from a manga classic: sex, violence & humour.
Story wise it's very simple: Basically there are some bad guys and a lone wanderer has to kill them. Nice. They even manage to throw a bit of a love story into the mix for good measure.
Yes this film has it all. But I would say that it is not a film for everybody. Infact it is a boys movie thru and thru. Remember it's a cartoon with violence. And violent it certainly is. Nowadays when we have the digital blood spillage in films like "300", it's good to see the old fashioned animated original.
If you enjoyed the violence in the animated part of Kill Bill, then this is the film for you. This film is now regarded as a classic.
superb anime December 25, 2006 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This was one of the first anime films i watched as a kid and made me into a huge fan of manga animation. This film is nothing short of superb. The animation is top-notch coupled with a wicked script, good voice-acting and some of the most imaginative characters with superpowers i have ever seen. There is a demon who wields a giant twin bladed sword and can turn his body to stone.Another has a beehive inside his body. There is also a man who moves inside a shadow and has a huge mechanical claw. This film really does capture the imagination and i would recommend it to any hardcore manga fan or anyone who wants to see what this anime lark is all about.
