5 out of 5 stars The Killing's at Badger's Drift   February 14, 2006

Midsomer Murders has now been running for almost nine-years and although it has since lost one of its principal stars it shows no signs of slowing down. Based on the novels/characters created by Caroline Graham, the series focuses on family-man Chief Inspector Barnaby, brought to screen wonderfully by John Nettles (Bergerac). Paired against Barnaby’s conventional character is Sergeant Gavin Troy, a perhaps rash and naïve young policeman who has a lot to learn about the world of crime and detective work. The duo work extremely well together. The television programme I set in the fictional village of Midsomer, and although it must have the highest death count in the world, it is a tranquil, picturesque, quintessential place, inhabited by an assortment of bizarre characters. In every episode there is at least one murder, and Barnaby and Troy try to solve it; baffled and trickled all the way by red herrings, secrets, lies, betrayal, which all amount to a wonderful, gripping whodunit.

‘The Killing’s at Badger’s Drift’ is the very first episode of ‘Midsomer Murders’ ever made, and it was originally broadcast on 23rd March 1997 to a massive audience of 13.5 million viewers. It won the much sought after ‘Best Single Drama of the Year’ award, and its clear to see why. Even though its only the first episode it is definitely one of the best, and the plot is thick with clues, red herrings, etc which keeps the viewer hooked throughout. The characterisation of the villagers and of the police partnership is spot on here, and Anthony Horowitz turns in a truly wonderful adaptation of Caroline Graham’s novel. I was unable to fathom the identity of the killer and when s/he was revealed at the end I was completely surprised. Everything about this pilot episode is wonderful, excellent performances, well paced, great direction/locations and a nice gripping piece of drama to really enjoy. Highly recommended.

What can I say. But this is excellent. You will be at the edge of your seat. The one you think could be the murderer actually is not. Lots of twists and red herrings. A must for all fans.

If you are a budding teenager, (like I am) or an adult, who wants to relax on a Saturday night with a mystery to get your teeth into, then buy, "The Killings at Badgers Drift". It is in my opinion one of the best Midsomer Murders and it is not a boring pointless plot that doesn't explain everything. It's got a good and understandable plot with a clever twist.A typical but good British murder mystery, naturally consisting of 10 or so Characters, a few murders and one of them is the murderer. It has a powerful but twisted outcome. A brilliant contrast of characters. Iris Rainbird and her undertaker son, Dennis.(strange people!), The nice old lady, Emily Simpson, Catherine and Michael lacey, brother and sister and Phyllis Caddel, still mourning her dead sister. And many more. It is a village full of MANY secrets. If you are a Midsomer Murders fan like me and you can't choose which episode to buy, pick this one.(I did) It's Brilliant and if you watch it over and over again I bet you'll find a new bit of information you didn't know the first time!
