4 out of 5 stars BRANDED A COWARD   March 14, 2008

'Branded' was Chuck Connors' third television series, the first being 'The Rifleman' and the second a courtroom drama series entitled 'Arrest And Trial' in which he co-starred with Ben Gazarra.
Here he plays Captain Jason McCord, an army officer accused of cowardice and desertion when he is the only survivor of an Apache massacre at the Battle of Bitter Creek. A court martial finds him guilty and he is drummed out of the army.
The very impessive opening of each episode, together with the theme song, tells the story as, with drums beating, McCord is stripped of his insignia, his sabre is broken and thrown out of the fort, and he slowly walks after it.
Of course, he was not a coward, as is fully explained in episode 2, but wherever he goes his name is recognised and he is judged accordingly.
The series ran for 48 episodes and each is around 22 minutes long ( slightly shorter than usual ). The 16 episodes here have been remastered, although the sound is a little muffled at times. Guest stars include: Alex Cord, Claude Akins, John Dehner, John Ireland and John Carradine.
I have to say that my dvd set is an earlier set of Season 1 which was released by a company called Entertainment Distributing, but this appears to be a previous incarnation of Timeless Media Group who have since released two seasons under a different cover ( as advertised here ). I would assume that a third and final season will be released in due course.
For those who remember the theme song, here are the words:
'All but one man died... there at Bitter Creek.
And they say he ran away.
BRANDED...marked with the coward's shame
What do you do when you're branded?
Well, you fight for your name.
He was innocent... not a charge was true
But the world would never know.
BRANDED...scorned as the one who ran.
What do you do when you're branded?
And you know you're a man.
Wherever you go for the rest of your life
You must prove...you're a man!'
