totally addictive September 26, 2008 i've loved the Jonathan creek series right from the beginning, Alan Davies plays such a good part, along with Caroline Quentin, they go together like bread and butter, the banter between them is so amusing, never quite getting together, this box set was a very good investment as i will have hours and hours of my fave viewing for years to come. the story lines have all been good, and i love the explanations at the end of each programme.
Jonathan Creek September 18, 2008 I was always an avid fan of Jonathan Creek when it was first aired on the BBC. I was going to buy series 1&2 and series 3&4 boxsets sparately until I saw this boxset with the christmas specials included.
I like all the episodes ones that stand out for me are The house of Monkeys, The problem at Gallows Gate, Eye of the tiresias, Ghost's Forge, Miracle in Crooked Lane and both christmas specials. Series 4 was good but I have yet to watch it.
I do prefer Madeline to Carla however that doesn't make episodes with Carla in any less interesting. A worthwhile purchase, I can't wait for the brand new christmas special.
Jonny Creek September 11, 2008 I have to say it is one of my favourite shows to ever be on television. With most who dunnits, it is a case of who and why. It this case of Jonathan Creek, it's how. From locked room mysterys to people vanishing in the blink of an eye. Jonathan Creek solves the impossible again and again.
The second part of Creek in the first 3 series is the on/off relationship with Maddy. This can sometimes consume half the episodes themselves and blend seamlessly with the story.
I find myself watching these again and again, even if you remember how it's done, watching it back a second time is still easily done.
This set also features the Christmas Specials, which are a bit longer than normal and a bit higher in budget. With a new Christmas Special coming in December 2008, this set would be a fantastic addition to any collection to get you in the mood.
Some of the Mysteries are Truly Fascinating...BUT September 9, 2008 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
The problem with most "Whodunit" fiction, from Sherlock Holmes to Monk, from Murder She Wrote to Cracker is that once you've figured out the motive for the crime, then you've usually figured out who did it. And so the genius of some episodes of Jonathan Creek is that the question is not who, it's how.
The character of Jonathan Creek himself, the `Magic Mechanic' who's whole life revolves around using people's assumptions to trick them was one of the best ever conceived. For whilst we assume that the crime was impossible because it doesn't fit our preconceptions, Jonathan sees past that, ignoring what was `Likely' and sticking to what was `Logical.'
In the end however, even a writer as ingenious as David Renwick couldn't keep coming up with new and baffling scenarios that would have us all scratching our heads. And so even during the first series, he attempted to promote our assumptions and plant red herrings to try and keep us from figuring out the truth.
By far the worst example of this was the episode "Time Waits for Norman." A `mystery' based upon a premise so weak that I solved it in a matter of seconds, and with assumptions and red herrings so ridiculous that they'd insult the intelligence of a chimp. But even throughout the episodes that I thoroughly enjoyed , Creek's partners were both so irritating that I longed to slap them with a fish!
Leaving aside the utterly pointless "Will they, won't they" quasi-romantic rubbish, Caroline Quentin's character in the first three series and Julia Sawalha's in the fourth were both arrogant, petty, childish, selfish, vindictive and spiteful little ***** who only ever got in the way and leapt to the wrong conclusions. And so how in the name of the great holy donkey was Jonathan supposed to find them attractive?
In conclusion though, I would say that on balance it is worth buying this boxset. Because even after you've watched every episode and found out `how it was done,' many of the stories are still deeply fascinating and an absolute pleasure to watch.
A brilliant combination of mystery and magic. August 25, 2008 Having been a fan of Jonathan Creek since it began many years ago, and never being shown again on tv, I just had to buy this box set.
Jonathan Creek is a spellbinding combination of mgic, intrigue and humour, superbly lightening what can sometimes be a gruesome murder scene. The cast were chosen well, and interesting storylines keep your brain ticking over while you watch, trying to figure out the answer first.
Money well spent, I look forward to the forthcoming christmas special!
