Architect and film-maker Patrick Keiller's second feature is once again a semi-documentary odyssey concerning the un-named narrator and his friend Robinson. The pair have been commissioned to undertake a series of journeys to investigate 'the problem of England' starting in Reading and ending in Newcastle. The tone and style is a continuation of Keiller's previous film 'London' with echoes of the travels documented by Daniel Defoe and those more recently of Nicholas Pevsner. Like the first film the content is never less than totally absorbing and with a very dry, sharp sense of wit and a similar general absence of human activity and camera movement. However the main difficulty is that whereas 'London' was perfectly synonymous with the election of the Major government in 1992, the unfortunate timing of 'Robinson' fails to capture the transfer of power in 1997. The book of the script is important for two reasons; firstly, the interview which is provided is contextually fundamental given the events of 1997, and secondly the explanatory footnotes set out relevant background information. However in the interview Keiller makes a significant error when he appears to reduce the manufacturing v distribution/services arguments to architectural aesthetics, ignoring the end of manufacturing (and its resultant urbanism) as social project. What are the implications for the eventual disappearance of all of our cities and not just London? He is also surprisingly rather charitable to New Labour making no reference to John Prescott's (in particular) progression of the Thatcher project as Environment Secretary, something about which Robinson would surely have a great deal to say.

Robinson in Space is a gently paced travelogue through the economic climate of mid 1990s England. It is presented as a succession of largely unpopulated views filmed from still cameras and from the outset reads rather like a documentary.As a film it is almost hypnotic, its detatched and at times desolate imagery lingering on the screen like unturned pages. There are no actors with the exception of the disembodied and dead-pan voice of Paul Scofield who narrates the unfolding journey. As the story shifts between information on the economic state of the various locations and the events in the lives of the travellers (all the time against the backdrop of the distantly felt places) parallels begin to emerge between their lives and the findings of their research.
