wow July 8, 2008 ok so then its another vision of post apocalyptic future and now mankind has designed bioroids to help govern themselves into this comes the heroin deunan to try and save the day the good- the visuals are mind blowing the plot is quite inventive and the mixture of philosophic musings to action thankfully falls more into the action camp the bad - thankfully very little it slows down a little in the middle to crowbar some stuff about mans existence into the characters and as such it loses some momentum but that minor slip aside it flows brilliantly and looks truly stunning
AMBITIOUS FAILIURE June 17, 2008 This new completely CG anime couldn't be any further from the original 1988 hand drawn version. The original was ok for its time and this new version with all its techno wizardry is no better.
The story revolves around Deunan, the female protagonist of the feature and her relationship with the cyborg Briareous. Both characters are entangled in a web of intrigue, Briareous supporting the terrorists trying to free humans from Bio droid control and the elder's attempts to destroy what's left of humanity. The story at first intriguing lacks any real depth and immediacy to pull the viewer in, and half way through you begin not to care about the characters or what happens to them. Appleseed presents some interesting ideas, unfortunately they don't work cohesively.
This lack of cohesion can be blamed on a disjointed plot and awkward animation. Lauded as an example of cutting edge digital animation, and maybe because of the failure of Final Fantasy: The Spirits within, the film has gone for a deliberate cell shaded appearance. Even though the look of the film is striking, after a while, it feels awkward and strange. The characters don't look convincing; they lack charm and emotion making any empathy with them difficult. Where the animation dose succeed is in the fantastic cyborg and mecha designs, especially the gattling tank at the beginning and the mobile fortress at the end. These positives aside, Appleseed needs strong characters, and a strong story, none of which it possess.
CG is a fantastic tool and when used well, Ghost in The shell: Innocence and Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, being good examples CG can add richness and depth and help create effects not possible with traditional animation. None of which has been achieved with Appleseed, a film that looks awkward and bland. For a truly innovative CG film try Renaissance instead.
Good animated action flick January 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I haven't seen any of the other versions of Appleseed, so I can't compare this to them. As a result one or two small parts of the film didn't seem to be fully explained.
Otherwise I thought it was a good film, there's even a twist. The visuals are good too. Although I'm not sure if this would be suitable for people that don't like computer animated films. Also at ~100min running time you should be able to tell this isn't some half-baked film.
I've yet to watch the entire film with Japanese audio and English subs, but from what I saw at the beginning I think the translation is a bit too literal and ended up watching the rest of the film with the dubbed English audio.
If you're looking for the limited editon this isn't it, but the box still comes with the 2 discs.
Great but ? January 23, 2008 Great to see Appleseed remade but if only it had stuck to Masamune Shirows original Manga then it would have been better i feel but not possible to do in one film , still worth getting though for sure .
The quality of the dvd is brilliant... December 7, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've just seen this (for second time) on a PC rigged with state of art tech - in other words it can show DVD's at their best. This DVD looked like HD DVD ! Graphics and imagination are at maximum. Storyline is usual Japanese, so expect baffling logic and mystifying charm. Great fun.
