5 out of 5 stars Finest television ever produced in Scotland   July 14, 2007
10 out of 10 found this review helpful

Possibly the only TV series of all time that can be described as both soothing and endlessly informative.
In a sucession of brief vignettes Tom Weir takes us on a tour of the Scottish landscape and cultural history through his own unique worldview.
Weir's approach to this material is both informal and reverent; and throughout this series he effectively creates an alternative history of Scotland, unearthing a wealth of anecdote and opinion from previously unheard sources; while focussing on the marginal regions of Scotland.
His piece on the West Highlands; referencing both the experiences of his own youth and the Highland Clearances is possibly the single most poignant piece of television that this writer has ever borne witness to.
While the programme has gained something of a "cult following" through its late night repeats on STV and Grampian in recent years, the enthusiasm and knowledge of Tom Weir quickly subsumes such cynical readings.
"Weir's Way" should be an integral part of the high school history curriculum in post-devolution Scotland.
Highest possible recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Classic series from the great Tom Weir!   July 9, 2006

I remember watching this on TV as I grew up and the recent early morning repeats have achieved cult status.

As far as I am aware Tom didn't have a script and his love of the Scottish landscape and knowledge he had shone through in his narration.

Was sorry to hear of his passing recently. He was in his 90s and will be sadly misssed. At least we have the legacy of this series and it is well worth buying. It captures the very essence of life and landscape in Scotland in the 1970s.
