Gastronomical policing April 12, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This sits up there with Rumpole of the bailey,Midsomer murders,Rosemary and Thyme,Hetty Wainthrop investigates ,The Mrs Bradely mysteries and Jonathan Creek .Pure brilliance that leaves the American crime shows far behind .
My only complant is that there seems to be a fault with the collection . I bought two sets and one disk is missing from the first set and replaced with two identical disks . On the second set the very same disk is faulty.I have contacted Amazon and still no reply .
Low-Key, Under-rated Classic November 14, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This delightful series features one of the least likely looking detectives in TV history, but it also features a great cast, good writing and a format which doesn't seem to get stale.
Basically, Henry Crabbe has to juggle the demands of runnning a proper restaurant, with being a relectant policeman due to circumstances beyond his control. There are no car chases, gunfights and US type melodrama to spoil the enjoyment.
As well as being a DI, Henry is also a brilliant chef and we have used many of the ideas and recipes in this show.
DVD extras are basically an interview with Maggie Steed (Mrs Crabbe). Picture and sound quality are fine. Recommended for fans of Rumpole and quality British comedy.
Cookery, Sleuthing and Wine February 20, 2007 26 out of 26 found this review helpful
Henry Crabbe is a part-time policeman who runs a restaurant called 'Pie in the Sky'. His first love is food and cooking, but he faces constant interruptions in running the restaurant whenever he is ordered to solve crimes (a regular occurence).
An unlikely storyline, but it works beautifully, mainly thanks to the excellent cast (Richard Griffiths plays Henry). This is a gentle series, with lots of entertainment value and some cracking recipes! It's a pleasure to get all episodes in this well-presented boxed set. Highly recommended (try watching it with a dish of olives and a glass of wine!)
