Top Notch! June 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Want to watch a sci-fi series that breaks the mould... Well this could be it.. is it :)
The problem about writing a review on a series, is giving a good over view without spoiling the main plots, and its these plots that sets the series apart from the rest that "seem" to be cast in the same mould. So I'll try and give off the "essence" of the series without trashing your viewing pleasure :D
It starts off with a human who is pulled through a wormhole into some distant part of the galaxy.. (What you mean that doesn't sound like "breaking the mould") ... granted sounds a bit olde school, but what sets this human apart from the rest is not the superhuman and weak aliens where the human rules the roost. Its the opposite, the aliens are far more advanced, mentally, physically and technologically that the human frailties are brought to the fore.
John Crichton lost, confused and well portrayed by Ben Browder ends up on a prison transport where the said prisoners have successfully won their freedom. It is here where the fun and games start, after first contact and aided by translation microbes the aliens and the human are able to open dialogue... one problem, he looks just like the race who imprisoned them...(Not exactly like braking the mould ehy!)... But after a bio test the results show similar but distinctive differences, and John is able to slowly form a bond of trust at first and then friendship. (Seen it, got the t-shirt, even the main plot of "wanting to get home") ..
Even with the simple formal outlined above, the series is pure joy to watch, some are comical, some profound and some teetering on the edge of the insane.
So your set for watching something that you've seen a thousand times.. .Human goes to space, something goes wrong, ends up on a strange ship filled with strange aliens... Well, yes and no... one of the great things about this series is the constant twists and turns. You think you know what's going to happen and the all of a sudden ..bam.. the plot changes, the human who wanted to go home, is now caught in a mental struggle of whether it would be wise to... Then add on top of this the best "evil character" ever conceived, who wants some knowledge that is in Johns head and you are graced with a plot line that can have you on the edge of your seat.
Then you have the inevitable love story between the human, and the alien... But that ante plain sailing either (never is). Tie that in with the three or four main plots and you have a series that can offer you everything, laughter, tears, suspense and the "One more episode" factor.
Alas there is some gripes about the series and that is no fault of the actors nor the production team. It comes from the fact that the sci-fi channel pulled the plug in the series (due to high production costs) before the plots were tied off. But due to fanbased pressure they released the Peacekeeper wars to wrap it up.. Again this "mini-series" is everything you come to expect, but I couldn't help but feel it was kinda rushed... Maybe that just me wanting more.
10 stars where not available February 3, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
You will read many reviews going into details regarding this space saga but I will spare you that and just sayL
SEE IT!!!
The best praise I can give it is that even watching it a third time it managed to surprise me in places and make me notice details that I missed the first two times around.
Absolutely great show, but NO SUBTITLES?!!!! January 31, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Love the show, too bad it had to end. But it was a struggle to catch every line in it. I'm not English; therefore I need a little help supported by subtitles, especially with alien voices and sci-fi terms. It's a shame that with such a great sci-fi show (one of the best indeed) even English subtitles for the hearing impaired aren't available. 5 stars for the show, 1 star for the DVD producers.
