Hardwick Hall - more glass than wall - a jewel of Tudor architecture. August 2, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Hardwick Hall is one of the most important buildings in English architecture. The DVD shows how the Hall represents the transition from medieval building to the use of the new ideas of the renaissance. It illustrates how these elements are represented on the inside and the outside of the building.
The story of life in a grand Tudor establishment is unfolded for us as are details of the life of its builder, Bess of Hardwick who married her fourth husband George Talbot and became Countess of Shrewsbury. Bess was the richest woman in England after Queen Elizabeth I and her granddaughter was a claimant to the throne on the death of the old queen.
The tapestries, furnishings and plaster wall friezes at Hardwick are of national importance and have been uniquely preserved because the house was neglected as a dwelling after the building of Chatsworth House nearby. Whether you can or can't get to Derbyshire to visit the house itself, this DVD is a very useful illustration of its purpose and the treasures lying within.
