3 out of 5 stars A colourful, if simple, bedtime favourite   May 4, 2007

I sometimes reflect that if I could really predict what children would like I would be very rich by now.

This DVD was given to Alice (3 1/2 years) as a present by friends with a daughter the same age on the basis that it was one of her favourites. I have to admit that on first viewing my own impression was that it was pretty superficial fare that was unlikely to hold any enduring appeal.

The stories all seem to follow the same three-part formula: 1) Peppa and family are doing something 2) Something unexpected/unfortunate happens 3) Problem is fixed and everyone has a good grunt. Don't get me wrong, it's good clean fun, I just thought that once Alice had got over the novelty of Peppa's trademark oinking that she would quickly lose interest.

How wrong I was. This has turned out to be as frequent a request on the bedtime (and longcarjourneytime) 'jukebox' as Charlie and Lola, Maisy and other stalwarts. Is it the comfort of seeing a family that has its little arguments but always manages to patch them up in the end? Or is it just the lilting theme tune, colourful animation and porcine sound effects? Who knows, and ultimately I suppose who cares? (although if you figure it out please tell me!)*

As harmless, albeit slightly pointless, fun that's a hit with the little people this can definitely be recommended.

* My wife thinks she has it: Daddy Pig is always the butt of the joke. So true to life.
