A new version of the celebrated novel "The Scarlet Pimpernel" is being shot at Midsomer Magna manor house. The colourful members of the crew are the director Nick Cheyney, who admits preferring to shoot another film, the producer Braxton, Cheneyney's rival. He can't stand his director and is having an intense love affair with Diane Charteries, Terence Charteries's wife, the owner of the manor, trying to make his marriage survive. Their suffering daughter Leonie knows Cheyney, being her son's father. Now she lives with her new boyfriend, the boss of a bus company.
Charteries has just employed former con Jed Norris as a scurity clerk.
His new pursuit amazes both Barnaby and Jones, committed to tracking down another con, George Ince. Meanwhile, the gay actor Raymond Clandillon has begged for an extra in the film and the flamboyant Cheyney is beheaded with the guillotine used in the film. Will Barnaby and Jones track down the murderer before another victim is beheaded? This unequalled episode was broadcast in Italy last summer, showing great whodunit and grand setting.
