3 out of 5 stars The Art of the Travelogue   January 6, 2008

The sleeve notes explain that ".....In the gentler days of subtler advertising it was quite common to show a film about Yorkshire or Sussex and not to mention British Railways or even show a train..."

I found each of these films of interest, and on their own would earn a place complimenting CDs of railway films, but its worth being aware these 13 films largely contain very little actual railway footage.

Another delightful collection of short films from the British Transport collection. The best ones are those from the 1950s and 1960s. 'North to the Dales', 'Yorkshire Sands', 'Down to Sussex' have all the BTF trademarks: literate poetic commentaries, good use of music, a real sense of time and place. The later films from the 1970s eg 'Midland Country' and 'Golfers in a Scottish landscape' lack the charm of the earlier films but are still nonetheless enjoyable. 'Lancashire Coast' is a little disappointing as it uses footage from the much superior 'Holiday' which is available on an earlier volume in the series. I am sure 'Journey to the Sea' uses professional actors so it comes across as rather stagey and contrived. 'A Desperate Case' provides advice, in a humorous way, on packing a suitcase which still holds good today. It's not just the towns and views on display here, but the people, the clothes they wore and the transport they used. The films are useful social documents, mirroring the attitudes of the times in which they were made.
