Product Description Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Everybody knows the name. Everybody knows Sherlock Holmes - or thinks they do. But few know the true story of Conan Doyle's remarkable life and fewer still the extent to which Doyle suppressed and sanitised the pain of Holmes' birth. Set between 1892 and the early 1900s, a new feature length drama for BBC TWO, The Strange Case of Sherlock Holmes & Arthur Conan Doyle, written by David Pirie (Murder Rooms, The Woman in White), is an exploration of the dark family past which drove Arthur Conan Doyle to create the world-famous detective... and then to murder him.

Very slow but ultimately worth the wait for a charming denoument September 17, 2008 Having missed this BBC production when it first aired in 2006 and recently re-watching on DVD the excellent 'Murder Rooms' starring the late and much-missed Ian Richardson as Dr Bell, I was curious to see if once again writer David Pirie could bring the same sense of authenticity, tension, and entertainment to what is bascially a psychological tale that this time analyses the reasons behind Arthur Conan Doyle creating his detective Sherlock Holmes.
While I believe only hardcore Doyle/Holmes enthusiasts will possibly stick with Cilla Ware's beautiful and atmospherically shot 89-minute film, the very slow story is ultimately worth the wait for its charming, if not a little predictable, denoument. The performances throughout are uniformly wonderful, and Douglas Henshall's, I believe overlooked, performance as Conan Doyle conveys the man's inner turmoil in a very believable and moving manner; probably the best role he's ever played.
All together a very entertaining and very watchable 89 minutes and well worth its current hefty price to purchase on DVD.
